Pinch Hits 42-54

There are two post deadline PH posts! This is the second one. You can view both at once here (link), and go directly to the first post here (link)

Pinch hits are participants who are without creators; pinch hitting is the practice of volunteering to make a gift for a pinch hit. These pinch hits are all due on October 28 at 11:59PM EDT (countdown), but the due date is flexible if the PHer needs more time. (Edit Ocober 24th: Due dates for claims from this point on are now set for November 1st at 11:59PM EST)

Fic In A Box has a very unusual set of assignment requirements: everyone is owed (and is asking for) 10k of fanfiction, which by default can be given as one 10k+ fic or several 1k+ fics. Participants have also had the option to opt-in to other minimum lengths or to other formats of fanwork. The other fanwork mediums are given word count equivalents, which you can view on the medium guidelines post.

Additionally, PHs can be picked up in 1k increments! Each PH will list how much total is still available in the cut tag and header of that PH.

Finally, in order to pick up a pinch hit you need to either email us or comment on this post (comments are screened) with:

the amount of wordcount you would like to claim (even if you're going to do fanart or some other non-fic opt-in medium, just convert it for us!)
the exact username of the AO3 account you will be posting your fill(s) from (if you post from a different account from the one you give us, we won't be able to count the PH as filled unless you update us!)
an email or Discord ID where we can reach you (you might not be getting the AO3 assignment when you pick up a PH, so we need to know how to contact you in case there are problems!)

What I like about Solaris the book, specifically: I like the newer translation and I like the sort of artificially-academic feel of the storytelling. I like the philosophical bleakness of the story as well as the bits of hope scattered here and there. What I like about Solaris 1972, specifically: I like the specificity of the technological trimming of the setting. I like the actors who portray the characters, and their performances. I like the relationship between Kris and his visitor, how she reacts when he tries to kill her or puts her on a shuttle or tries to remember how her original died or explain things to him. I like what it implies without saying about Solaris the planet. I like the general tone of the ensemble and how they all react to the weirdness that's going on.

What I like about Solaris 2002, specifically: I liked the style of storytelling of the more recent movie, and the cinematography, and the surreal feel to how things happened in parts of it. I liked the themes it added or emphasized about love and loss and obsession and letting go, that were perhaps implied by the original's plot but not the most important to the author or the book version. I liked the ending a lot.

What I love about A Memory Called Empire: I love the setting, both Lsel and Teixcalaan, and even the little bit we get of the alien opponents they're going to be meeting soon. I love the characters, especially Mahit and Yskandr and Nineteen Adze and Three Seagrass -- but really all of them.
I'd love to see a fic exploring Yskandr's relationships with Six Direction or Nineteen Adze or both, in the past of the novel, and I'd love to see a story exploring Three Seagrass and Mahit's potential relationship, and I'd love some kind of social media AU of them, which can include poetry if you want (in-universe documents include poetry in Teixcalaan), I'd adore any interactive fic, and also I really feel like if you want to write meta or a ship manifesto it could help me get more fic in the future and I'd enjoy it for its own self too. Big fan of polythieves. Protagonist-centric, good with P5R content. Aus, in-between scenes with the thieves and how their relationships grow, the kids being badass but also feral, awkward teens learning their way in the world. Akira being a big bro to Futaba, found family, maybe AU where Akechi gets drawn in early and as a result, he goes feral on them sooner but joins up sooner as well (and doesn’t try to murder Akira.) Or canon-centric where they work through that particular trauma.

Shogo/Keiko: anything about their first program! Feel free to blend any of the continuities--in the book-verse, what was their relationship or lack thereof really like, and how has it changed in Shogo's memories/attempts to manipulate Shuya, Noriko, the adults, others? I'm very intrigued by the movie flashback, and in particular, the implications that Keiko might have been manipulating Shogo into killing her, so something that explores that angle would be great. But I'm interested in anything about the Kobe class/program!
Sakura/Kazuhiko: what if they had gotten separated--would they have struggled to reunite or given up? Could anything have convinced them to play? Does Kaz admire Sakura's pacifism or resent it?
Mizuho: more from her perspective, seeing the conflict as part of her fantasy? Her relationships with other students before the Program? What if she had teamed up with someone else?
Worldbuilding: other changes in this alternate history now that Japan is an isolationist dystopia? What does the rest of the world think? How did so much change and yet Bruce Springsteen was still in the right place to write "Born to Run"?

I love the worldbuilding of noir Los Angeles and all the hints of the larger universe these characters are in. I love replicants and the ways they struggle to assert their own personhood. I love the respect and admiration among all these weird characters, even (and especially) when they're trying to kill each other.
General fic ideas:
Rick/Rachael: How did they figure out she was different? What if she had lived--would she have tried to reunite with Rick, or go underground with Ana? Her perspective on the events of the original--why does she kill Leon? What makes her trust Rick?
Roy, Leon, Pris, & Zhora: deciding to rebel? What if some or any of them had lived and met the Nexus-8s? Do other replicants view them as heroes or idiots, or some of each?
Freysa, Sapper, & Rachael: their life in hiding? Were there philosophical disagreements, or were they all just as gung-ho about revolution as Freysa? Does not knowing she was a replicant for a while make Rachael approach things differently than the others?
Joshi/Luv: stoic fighting women gritting it out while trying to kill each other...look, I ship it. They clash on opposite sides of some other case? They cross paths and are attracted to each other before they realize each other's identities? They get turned on by violence in a slightly less deadly way? Or equally deadly whatever works.
K/Luv: comparisons and contrasts! K is the LAPD's reliable cop, Luv is Wallace's obedient sidekick, but neither of them are totally satisfied with it. Do they try to recruit each other for clandestine operations? Reluctantly save each other's life (like Luv with the drone attack)? Or find their own path away from the institutions? Like Joshi/Luv, I find the violence/conflict to be part of the allure, so feel free to go dark (but please no non-con).
K/Mariette: what motivates Mariette to join the rebellion--is she an idealist, looking for adventure, bored? Does she find any of that with K? Trying to convince K that she's more interesting than Joi? K isn't used to having someone who cares about him just for himself and is charmed?
Worldbuilding: how does the baseline test work for others, or the Voight-Kampff? What's going on in the colonies? We've seen what Los Angeles looks like both in 2019 and 2049, how are the other parts of the world faring? Tell me about Cityspeak, the creole!

-Police records of the wanted replicants. What the LAPD has concluded, what they don't know.
-Technical specs/outlines for how the Tyrell and/or Wallace Corporations create replicants. What parts of the process have changed, what is the same? How does Ana create memories?

-The Arbiter and/or Viigand: I feel like these guys are both like "I'm here for chess because chess is serious business, why is everything on fire." I'm intrigued by the Arbiter's "I don't like women, I don't take dope" line--did the KGB have a plan B or C or Z for bribing him? What does he think of Freddie's "One Night in Bangkok" opinions? How did Viigand and Anatoly meet, and how did Molokov prepare Viigand to face his former colleague/rival? Do they commiserate about "everyone else is crazy," or is the Arbiter too concerned about remaining impartial? Do they run across any of the other characters afterwards?

You can obviously talk about death/grief/mourning, and I'd be interested in seeing other points of view, like the cube creatures, the rock creatures, the "villain", and even the mother herself. Feel free to go super introspective if you want. If you feel like worldbuilding beyond what we see in the game, that would be cool too, as if the world actually existed outside of Gris' mind.
> This would be kinda long, but if you feel like it, you could definitely write an AU where Gris goes through the world in order to save her mother from the brink of death/bring her back from the dead. A whole reversal of the story could be interesting!
> Emojis: using Gris' face (or maybe the cube friend! or both!) for something like :thinking: or :ok_hand: or with a heart would be amazing. I'd rather have them happy and colorful, rather than melancholic like the game (they'd be for discord use).

> Speaking of main cast, feel free to use anyone you want. I'm partial to Keith & Pidge brotp, good old broganes, and Matt, but anyone is fine. Background ships are fine too!

Love Tanner resurrection, Came Back Wrong or Kayden having to make a significant sacrifice for it. For the unconventional mediums, I love the idea of one of them being a radio host (or podcaster in a modern au) and encountering the supernatural, or any other in universe document hinting at different parts of their lives off of the mountain. Would definitely prefer there be an element of the supernatural involved.

I love this canon very much and would be thrilled to get anything for it. If you're up for something weird, I would love anything that leans into how experimental the books could get at times- playing around with time and timelines, getting meta, using the screenplay/script format to play around with pov and how close the reader is to the character/narrator, mission reports that disintegrate along with the timeline/the writer's mental state etc.
I do love regular brand Eight/Fitz, but I'm particularly into these rarepairs. Anji is wonderful, so are Compassion and Sam and I'd be happy to have them included.
