Nomination clarifications are queries and updates about tags we find confusing. The goal of nominations is to create a tagset of unambiguous, easy to understand tags that will be useful to participants and solidly within the scope of the exchange.

Tags are separated by query vs rejection notice, form vs AO3 nomination, and then by fandom. You can respond anonymously to this post or logged in. If you are not the nominator but have relevant fandom knowledge about something, please speak up! If you have questions about nominations not covered in this post, please ask!

Tagset Technical Support

In Fic In A Box, we separate basic tagset maintenance like fixing incorrectly spelled tags or removing duplicates from the tagset moderation that requires making judgement calls. If you have a tagset problem or question that falls into the former camp, please head on over to the Tagset Technical Support post (link)! We've found over the past couple days that splitting these technical problems out into their own post does make it easier for us to keep track of them.

Fandom Combinations/Splits Decisions

  • Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling — We haven't heard from the nominator so we're going to reject the nominated tag "Delphi & Harry Potter (Harry Potter)" and move it to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child - Thorne & Rowling.
  • Blue Lock — We will be keeping the manga and anime separate. The nominator who nominated without specifying should let us know which they would prefer; otherwise we can't accept them.

Queries

Google Forms nominations

  • Barbie (Movie 2023): Allan/Ken (Barbie Movie) — Nominatior, which Ken do you want? If you don't care which Ken, we can accept as "Allan/Any Ken"
  • Barbie (Movie 2023): Stereotypical Barbie/Gloria (Barbie Movie) — We've accepted as "Margot Robbie's Barbie/Gloria" to keep tags in this fandom consistent.
  • Dimension 20 - Other Seasons: Andhera & BINX & Chirp & Hob & Rue & Squak (D20 - Other) — Could we have full names for these characters please?
  • Forgotten Realms: WB: Duergar Society — The Forgotten Realms AO3 canonical is a parent tag of Baldur's Gate (Video Game) and that is a tagset mess waiting to happen, so we're going to approve this fandom as "Forgotten Realms (Tabletop RPG DFE)" to prevent wandering, unless the nominator would prefer something else. (But we're pretty sure you mean the Tabletop setting, so we'll accept as described if we don't hear from you.)
  • Good Omens (TV): Aziraphale & The Bentley (Good Omens TV) — Is the car sentient? Objects can't be nominated as characters in FIAB, only people.
  • Good Omens (TV): Aziraphale/Crowley & The Bentley (Good Omens TV) — Is the car sentient? Objects can't be nominated as characters in FIAB, only people.
  • Good Omens (TV): Crowley & The Bentley (Good Omens TV) — Is the car sentient? Objects can't be nominated as characters in FIAB, only people.
  • Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - Susanna Clarke: WB: Female Magicians (JS & MR) — Sorry nominatior, this would be better as a Solo: tag, which we would be happy to sub in for you. Alternatively, could you expand a little on what kind of worldbuilding you're looking for about female magicians?
  • Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - Susanna Clarke: WB: Magicians outside of Britain (JS & MR) — Sorry nominatior, this would be better as a Solo: tag, which we would be happy to sub in for you. Alternatively, could you expand a little on what kind of worldbuilding you're looking for about magicians outside of Britain?
  • Mapp & Lucia - All Media Types: WB: The Hurst (Mapp & Lucia) — I'm having a hard time googling this, could the nominator let me know what this is?
  • Mapp & Lucia - All Media Types: WB: Tilling (Mapp & Lucia) — I'm having a hard time googling this, could the nominator let me know what this is?
  • Naruto: Uchiha Inoichi/Uzumaki Naruto (Naruto) — "Uchiha Inoichi" does not appear to be a canonical Naruto character, can the nominator please clarify who they meant?
  • Persona 5: WB: Social Links in Maruki's World (Persona 5) — "Social Links" seems to be the name for a game mechanic or something? We're really not sure. Nominator, can you explain what this tag means?
  • Q.E.D. - All Media Types: Mizuhara Kana & Touma Sou (Q.E.D.) Mizuhara K (Q.E.D.) — Hey nominator, something went wrong with this tag. What did you mean to nominate?
  • Shingeki no Kyojin | Attack on Titan: WB: The Colossal Titans in the Walls (Attack on Titan) — Nominatior, this seems like a group, which would mean it should be a Solo: tag. Alternatively, can you elaborate on what kind of worldbuilding you want from this tag?
  • The Forgotten Beasts of Eld - Patricia McKillip: WB: Cyrin's Stories and Other History Referred to In Book (Forgotten Beasts of Eld) — Nominator, can we get more information from you about what kind of worldbuilding you're looking for from this tag? It seems from the Wikipedia summary that Cyrin is a boar that speaks in riddles and allegory
  • Twilight Series - Stephenie Meyer: WB: How the Denali Coven Made Those Succubus Rumors (Twilight- Meyer) — Nominator, this feels a little like a prompt instead of something to worldbuild about. We would like to accept as, "WB: Development/Spread of Succubus Rumors"

Ao3 tagset nominations

  • Amnesia: The Dark Descent: WB: Brennenberg Castle Blueprints & Layout (Amnesia), WB: Brennenberg Castle Interiors & Locations (Amnesia) — Nominator, we're a little confused about how these two tags are supposed to be different. Could you elaborate?
  • Death Note (Anime & Manga): WB: Death Note Digitised (Death Note) — Is the Death Note digitized over the course of canon?
  • Fire Emblem: Fuukasetsugetsu | Fire Emblem: Three Houses: WB: Incarnating Sothis (Fire Emblem: Three Houses) — Nominator, we've been able to find Sothis' character page, but nothing about what incarnating her means. Can you elaborate on this nomination?
  • Lockwood & Co. (TV): WB: Night Cabs (Lockwood & Co TV) — We're having a hard time finding information on this nomination. Are night cabs just normal cabs driven at night, or are they different from other cabs?
  • Piranesi - Susanna Clarke: The House & Piranesi (Piranesi) — Is the House sentient? The wikipedia summary of the book doesn't seem to imply that the House is also a person, just a location.
  • Star Trek: Lower Decks (Cartoon): WB: How the Arts Have Survived in a Future Where AI Is Standard (ST: LWD) — This is phrased too much like a prompt instead of a concrete part of the canon universe. We'd like to accept as "WB: The Arts in a Future where AI Is Standard"
  • Warhammer 40k (Novels) - Various Authors: WB: The Blood Angels Librarius Order before the Edict of Nikaea — This tag is just a group at a specific point of time, which doesn't tell us what kind of worldbuilding you're hoping for. Googling this is proving hard, but we'd be looking for a tag that was more like "WB: Rumors About [Group] Before [Event]" or "WB: Politics of [Group] Before [Event]"
  • Warhammer 40k (Novels) - Various Authors: WB: The Librarius Orders of the Imperium Secundus (Ultramarines and Dark Angels and Blood Angels) — This tag seems to be a group, rather than a specific worldbuilding request. Googling this is proving a little hard, but we're looking for a tag more like "WB: Rumors About [Group]" or "WB: Recruitment/Logistics/Organization of [Gruop]"
  • Warhammer 40k (Novels) - Various Authors: WB: The Revenant Legion/Immortal Ninth before Sanguinius is discovered/shortly after — This tag is just a group at a specific point of time, which doesn't tell us what kind of worldbuilding you're hoping for. Googling this is proving hard, but we'd be looking for a tag that was more like "WB: Rumors About [Group] Before [Event]" or "WB: Politics of [Group] Before [Event]"
  • 人渣反派自救系统 - 墨香铜臭 | The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System - Mòxiāng Tóngxiù: WB: Wife Plots (Scum Villain) — Nominator, what is it about wife plots that you want worldbuilding about?

Google Forms nominations

  • Degrees of Lewdity (Video Game): WB: Whitney's arrangement with Bailey — Sorry, nomination, this should be a prompt under a Solo: or normal relationship nomination. If the Solo: or & or / tag you need isn't nominated, we're happy to sub it in for you.
  • Gourmet Hound (Webcomic): WB: Detective Mystic (Gourmet Hound) — Nominator, can you give us more info on this? We're having a hard time googling.
  • Hustle Cat (Visual Novel): Finley & Avery Grey & Graves & Hayes & Landry & Mason & Reese (Hustle Cat) — Sorry nominator, per the Nominations Guidelines only relationships with six or fewer characters are allowed.
  • Hustle Cat (Visual Novel): Finley/Avery Grey/Graves/Hayes/Landry/Mason/Reese (Hustle Cat) — Sorry nominator, per the Nominations Guidelines only relationships with six or fewer characters are allowed.
  • Jurassic Park (Original Trilogy): WB: Alan Grant's career (Jurassic Park OT) — Sorry, nominator, this would be better as a prompt under a Solo: Alan Grant request. We're happy to approve as that! Or, if you can come up with a broader WB: tag that doesn't just focus on one character, we'd be happy to sub another WB tag in.
  • NEEDY GIRL OVERDOSE (Visual Novel): WB: Any (NEEDY GIRL OVERDOSE (Visual Novel)) (NEEDY GIRL OVERDOSE) — We'll add all the WB: Any tags at the end, so you don't have to nominate them.
  • So How Does a Centaur Eat Anyway? - Judith Tarr: WB: Any (How Does a Centaur Eat) — We'll add all the WB: Any tags at the end, so they don't need to be nominated.
  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (TV): WB: Lathanites on Earth (ST: SNW) — This seems like a specific group, so unfortunately we can't accept it. We would be happy to change it into a Solo: nomination. Alternatively, can you elaborate on what kind of worldbuilding you're specifically looking for?
  • 賭ケグルイ | Kakegurui (Anime & Manga): WB: Any (賭ケグルイ | Kakegurui (Anime & Manga) (Kakegurui) — We'll add all the WB: Any tags at the end, so you don't have to nominate them.

Ao3 tagset nominations

  • Creator's Choice of Fandom: All tags. — This fandom is not allowed in FIAB.
  • Dragon Age (Video Games): WB: Fereldan nobles (Dragon Age) — This is a group, so it should be a Solo: tag. Or we can workshop the tag so that it's asking for more specific worldbuilding. For example, "WB: Fereldan Social Class (Dragon Age)" or "WB: Fereldan Aristocracy Membership/Rights/Responsibilities (Dragon Age)"
  • Fallout: New Vegas: WB: Brotherhood of Steel (Fallout: New Vegas) — This is a group, so it should be a Solo: tag. Or we can workshop the tag so that it's asking for more specific worldbuilding. For example, "WB: Rumors About the Brotherhood of Steel (Fallout: New Vegas)"
  • Fallout: New Vegas: WB: Caesar's Legion (Fallout: New Vegas) — Caesar's Legion is both a physical place and a faction you can join. Nominator, what worldbuilding do you want about this group that isn't covered by switching this nomination to a Solo: tag? For example, are you looking for something like WB: Caesar's Legion Base or WB: Caesar's Legion Organization and Logistics
  • X -エックス- | X/1999: WB: Dragons of Earth (X1999) — This is a group, so it should be a Solo: tag. Or we can workshop the tag so that it's asking for more specific worldbuilding. For example, "WB: Rumors About the Dragons of Earth (X1999)"
  • X -エックス- | X/1999: WB: Dragons of Heaven (X1999) — This is a group, so it should be a Solo: tag. Or we can workshop the tag so that it's asking for more specific worldbuilding. For example, "WB: Rumors About the Dragons of Heaven (X1999)"
  • X -エックス- | X/1999: WB: Princess Hinoto's Magical Role Before 1999 (X1999) — This tag is too focused on one character. You can either nominate Solo: Princess Hinoto and include a prompt for this in your optional details, or we could accept a tag like WB: Role of Magic In Politics
  • X -エックス- | X/1999: WB: Princess Hinoto's Political Role Before 1999 (X1999) — This tag is too focused on one character. You can either nominate Solo: Princess Hinoto and include a prompt for this in your optional details, or we could accept a tag like WB: Role of Magic In Politics

We may at some point need to start rejecting queried AO3 noms so that we can see nominations under them (although we haven't gotten to that point yet) because of how the tagset backend works. If we've queried a tag and later rejected it, you can still comment on the noms posts and we'll work the tag out!

If your nominations were rejected and are not listed here, they were incorrect or disallowed. Please review the nominations guidelines (link) or try out Google Form nominating.

Hi, "WB: The Colossal Titans in the Walls (Attack on Titan)" is mine. As some background since I'm not sure if mods are canon familiar, all titans are transformed human beings, and in the case of the colossal titans in the walls they have entirely lost their human identities and are insentient as titans. The sort of worldbuilding I'd be interested for them is something from precanon exploring who the people who became the wall titans were, and how they were chosen for this task - were they volunteers intending to serve their people? Pressganged prisoners forced to lose themselves? Randos? Otherwise, I'd be interested in a postcanon story (all titans seem to be returned to their human selves at the end of the story) exploring what happens to or what is done with these people who are basically time capsules a century displaced in time. If any of these people appeared as characters, they'd be completely canon OCs.

Accepting the tag as "Solo: The Colossal Titans in the Walls (Attack on Titan)" would work fine for me as well.

(The Bentley nominator)

That would depend on your definition of sentient. As of season 2 the Bentley is shown to have some personality, it follows Aziraphale when parked and has to be told to go back to its spot and stay parked, Aziraphale refers to it "not wanting" to increase the speed, and it changes Crowley's music to Queen, but plays what Aziraphale wants with some stern talking to. These things happen independently of Crowley's will, but he does have some undefined psychic connection to it (he can "feel" from a distance that it's being driven under the speed limit and is now yellow).

I wouldn't say it's a person, but it seems to both be and be treated as some sort of a pet? I thought pets/animal level sentience was allowed but if not then yeah, I don't think the Bentley would count, and I'm fine with leaving it out.

For Barbie, Allan/Any Ken is good with me.

For Dimension 20, full names as known would be:
Andhera & BINX Choppley & Chirp Featherfowl & K.P. Hob & Delloso de la Rue & Squak Airavis

With the disambig, it's 4 characters over, but I'm good with whatever you decide.

Mapp & Lucia nominator here!

WB: The Hurst (Mapp & Lucia) — I'm having a hard time googling this, could the nominator let me know what this is?

The Hurst is Lucia's house in Riseholme, the fictional Elizabethan village in the Cotswolds, setting of Queen Lucia. In keeping with the village, she has caused it to be an even more Elizabethan house: "The three cottages dexterously transformed into The Hurst, presented a charmingly irregular and picturesque front. Two were of the grey stone of the district and the middle one, to the door of which led the paved path, of brick and timber; latticed windows with stone mullions gave little light to the room within, and certain new windows had been added; these could be detected by the observant eye for they had a markedly older appearance than the rest." In its garden "there was not a flower to be found save such as were mentioned in the plays of Shakespeare."

For convenience of checking, it's mentioned in this Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riseholme_(fictional_village)

WB: Tilling (Mapp & Lucia) — I'm having a hard time googling this, could the nominator let me know what this is?

Tilling is the fictional Sussex town to which Lucia moves in Mapp and Lucia. "They arrived at Tilling in the middle of the afternoon, entering it from the long level road that ran across the reclaimed marsh-land to the west. Blue was the sky overhead, complete with larks and small white clouds; the town lay basking in the hot June sunshine, and its narrow streets abounded in red-brick houses with tiled roofs, that shouted Queen Anne and George I in Lucia’s enraptured ears, and made Georgie’s fingers itch for his sketching-tools."

For convenience of checking, it's covered in this Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilling_(Sussex)

I'm interested in further descriptive details/sketches of, neighbor and visitor perspectives on, and happenings in the town and the house, whether fic or in-universe material.

A relationship I nominated was rejected and I dunno why. It's (currently) not listed on the tag set. It's Pavel Chekov/Leonard "Bones" McCoy in Star Trek AOS.

Crosshair & Echo & Hunter & Omega & Tech for Star Wars Bad Batch was rejected too. It's not in the tag set. That's the max of 6 characters in a nomination, right? So it'd count.

Forgotten Realms: WB: Duergar Society — The Forgotten Realms AO3 canonical is a parent tag of Baldur's Gate (Video Game) and that is a tagset mess waiting to happen, so we're going to approve this fandom as "Forgotten Realms (Tabletop RPG DFE)" to prevent wandering, unless the nominator would prefer something else. Hi, X/1999 nominator here. I think having both "Solo: Princess Hinoto" and "WB: Role of Magic in Politics" would work very well, as Hinoto is the major player but there are other magical characters who play a political role and that I'd be interested in.

For the dragons, I did intend both tags to be WB about what the dragons truly are, how they work (like how is one chosen for one group or the other, what are the rules of their powers, etc.) because the manga isn't super explicit about that and there's a lot to build around. Maybe "WB: Mechanics of the Dragons (of Earth)/(of Heaven)"?

Hello!
I'm the nominator of Jurassic Park (OT) WB Alan Grant's career.
I was meaning WB about the academic effects of the de-extinction of dinosaurs on paleontolists' careers. It doesn't have to be just one person, but I'm not sure how to phrase it to say what I mean.

How about WB: Effect of dinosaur reveal on careers of academics.

Not sure if that makes sense.

I did not nominate into these fandoms, but chasing down a wandering tag led me here:

"Horizon (Video Games)" and "Horizon: Zero Dawn (Video Game)" have a lot of overlap between their nominated characters and I'm not sure what the distinction between the fandoms is. At the very least, a lot of the "Horizon (Video Games)" nominations have "(Horizon: Zero Dawn)" as their disambig, which is at minimum tags wandering and possibly a sign of fandom overlap confusion.

(Gut instinct is that "Horizon (Video Games)" might be the umbrella tag for the series, which includes both "Horizon: Zero Dawn" and "Horizon: Forbidden West"? But idk, since I'm not in the fandom and didn't nominate anything for these fandoms, and either way I want to make sure you mods know and can make a decision!)

Piranesi - Susanna Clarke: The House & Piranesi (Piranesi) — Is the House sentient? The wikipedia summary of the book doesn't seem to imply that the House is also a person, just a location.

This would be a subject of in-universe debate if anyone ever actually talked about it, but Piranesi, the narrator, thinks of the House in a personified way, as a god that loves him and sends him (apparently accurate) messages. If he's correct, the House is a person, but whether he's correct is ambiguous. There are also some nominations for statues that I think you haven't gotten to yet -- these are appendages of the House.

The Warhammer 40k ones aren't mine but if the nominator doesn't turn up to suggest something else, I would love to see the last one added as either "Solo: Revenant Legion" or else "WB: Customs of the Revenant Legion" (the defining event in the original tag causes the legion to change their name, so calling them by this name in the first place indicates a point in the timeline imo).

I'm the Warhammer nominator.

I don't know if I have time to clarify them since Noms are now closed, and I ran into RL issues so couldn't really sit down and take care of it.

Thank you for your patience - this is my first time participating in this exchange.

Warhammer 40k (Novels) - Various Authors: WB: The Blood Angels Librarius Order before the Edict of Nikaea — This tag is just a group at a specific point of time, which doesn't tell us what kind of worldbuilding you're hoping for. Googling this is proving hard, but we'd be looking for a tag that was more like "WB: Rumors About [Group] Before [Event]" or "WB: Politics of [Group] Before [Event]"

Revision: WB: The Blood Angels Librarius Order before the Edict of Nikaea, how they were organized, who was the Chief Librarian, how they interacted with the Companies and/or Sanguinius, etc.

Warhammer 40k (Novels) - Various Authors: WB: The Librarius Orders of the Imperium Secundus (Ultramarines and Dark Angels and Blood Angels) — This tag seems to be a group, rather than a specific worldbuilding request. Googling this is proving a little hard, but we're looking for a tag more like "WB: Rumors About [Group]" or "WB: Recruitment/Logistics/Organization of [Group]"

Revision: WB: The Librarius Orders of the Imperium Secundus (Ultramarines and Dark Angels and Blood Angels) - how they interact and work together, frictions that form (and maybe get resolved?)

Warhammer 40k (Novels) - Various Authors: WB: The Revenant Legion/Immortal Ninth before Sanguinius is discovered/shortly after — This tag is just a group at a specific point of time, which doesn't tell us what kind of worldbuilding you're hoping for. Googling this is proving hard, but we'd be looking for a tag that was more like "WB: Rumors About [Group] Before [Event]" or "WB: Politics of [Group] Before [Event]"

Revision: WB: The Revenant Legion/Immortal Ninth before Sanguinius is discovered or shortly after, their customs, relying on their own, nerves about meeting Sanguinius, etc

Please let me know if I need to revise these a bit further!

Not a mod but canon-familiar, dropping a couple of suggestions here for how to fit these concepts into AO3 tags (100 characters or fewer) -- obviously then you can expand on the ideas in your signup to get more detail on what you'd like to see:

1) WB: Role/Organization of Blood Angels Librarius Order before the Edict of Nikaea
- I think this should cover the topics you note.

2) WB: Reformation of Librarius Orders in Imperium Secundus
- to focus on how they got back in action and what was different after their Primarchs abandoned the Edict
OR
Solo: Librarius Orders of the Imperium Secundus
- if what you're more interested in is the characters we know of and their actions, how they got along, stories focused on their adventures and relationships

3) WB: Customs of the Revenant Legion/Immortal Ninth
- to cover the way they were organized, their reputation, their tactics, etc.
AND/OR
Solo: The Revenant Legion/Immortal Ninth
- to explore how they felt about each other, how they felt about meeting Sanguinius
(I feel like you don't need to put the timing in the tag, because using this name for the Legion indicates it's before Sanguinius renamed them, but ymmv!)

Obviously just suggestions! Revise/reword as necessary to get the key concepts in there and fit into the length of a tag. Glad to see other 40k people doing WB stuff <3

Hi! I'm the Forgotten Beasts of Eld nominator. Hopefully this isn't too late.

Cyrin is a magical immortal boar who speaks in riddles, but riddles is a bit of a misnomer here — they're really allegorical parables. I've always taken them to be literal and historical (or at least based on real historical people), though set in a more distant past, since this is a fantasy book with lots of magic and mythical animals. But I'd be happy to read a version in which they are solely legends!

The riddles themselves imply specific characters and also worldbuilding. Other characters also tell riddles too, and the titular beasts have their own history of deeds (things like confounding three wise men with riddles, rescuing child princes, murdering princes, giving advice to courts and kings). These are usually mentioned in a couple of sentences only.

I'm interested in elaboration on anything in the riddles or the mentions of the history of the beasts (as well as other history dropped in) — what are those courts and quests and places mentioned in the story? Who is Glower the witch, or any of the princes or other witches or giants mentioned in those stories? What exactly happened in, for instance, the two-sentence story in which Glower turns a prince's entourage into pigs, and why did she do it?

I'm interested in expansions of what the Beasts were up to before they met Sybel — for instance, there's a swan that "carried the third daughter of King Merroc on its back away from the stone tower where she was held captive." Who is King Merroc and his third daughter, why was the third daughter held captive, how did the swan get involved in all of this? Other stories involve a falcon "who had torn to pieces the seven murderers of the wizard Aer" and a lion "who had seduced many an imprudent man into unwanted adventure".

I'm also interested in the general history of Eldwold the country (for instance, we know that the Sirle Lords have a history of revolt, but have never achieved independence), but I only thought of that reviewing the book, so it wasn't what I was thinking of for the original nom.

I'm happy to go with whatever the mods think would capture this! I think in general, I'm more interested in the characters and I can prompt for the history as an optional detail -- would it be clearer to go for Solo: Characters Mentioned in Riddles and Historical References in Books and Solo: Sybel's Beasts?

ETA: Also, while I'm not the Jonathan Strange nominator and I don't know what they were specifically looking for, I can provide some canon context! Female magicians as a concept are a huge piece of the worldbuilding (they never appear in the book, and there's an entire short story called "The Ladies of Grace Adieu", about a group of female magicians, but really about female magicians as a concept -- how they are treated differently than male magicians, how misogyny interacts with this, the ways female magicians have dealt with this, the stories of female magicians that are obscured by the narratives in-book focused on men.

For magicians outside of Britain, the book is very rooted in the concept of British magic as a specific strain of magic (which the characters will tell you is the best xD), with its own history and practices descended from one guy and then revived/modified by others (and the revival of magic is specifically talked about as a revival of magic in Britain, and there are no non-British magicians that appear). I read the nomination as being interested in magicians and their practice outside of Britain.
