Nomination clarifications are queries and updates about tags we find confusing. The goal of nominations is to create a tagset of unambiguous, easy to understand tags that will be useful to participants and solidly within the scope of the exchange.

Tags are separated by query vs rejection notice, form vs AO3 nomination, and then by fandom. You can respond anonymously to this post or logged in. If you are not the nominator but have relevant fandom knowledge about something, please speak up! If you have questions about nominations not covered in this post, please ask!

Queries

Google Forms nominations

  • 80 Days (Video game): WB: Automatons of the world and their differences (80 Days) — This tag is a little vague and, if automatons are sentient robots, maybe a little too close to a group nomination. Also, are you looking for smaller individual differences (for example, between automatons that are the same model, but are used for different functions in the same location) or for bigger differences (for example, between automatons produced in different cultures)?
  • Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter - Laurell K. Hamilton: WB: Fandom (Anita Blake) — We understand how your Online Dating and Celebrity Culture tags relate to Anita Blake, on account of vampires being public, but we're a little stumped about fandom as a worldbuilding topic for this canon and light googling hasn't cleared it up. Do some books in the series deal with a fanbase?
  • Bridgerton (TV): WB: Societal Changes Due to George III's Marriage to Charlotte (Bridgerton TV) — This appears to be about a real historical event, rather than something actually specific to the canon. Am I mistaken? If not, could we adjust this tag to clarify how you want it to relate to the events/characters/locations/etc of the canon?
  • Critical Role - Web Series: Cerrit Agrupnin/Wrayne Agrupnin — We've decide to split Critical Role this year, so we need to know which campaign the nominator wants this tag put in!
  • Critical Role - Web Series: Laerryn Coramar-Seelie/Loquatius Seelie — We've decide to split Critical Role this year, so we need to know which campaign the nominator wants this tag put in!
  • Critical Role - Web Series: Solo: Bolo from Aeor — We've decide to split Critical Role this year, so we need to know which campaign the nominator wants this tag put in!
  • Critical Role - Web Series: Solo: Patia Por'co — We've decide to split Critical Role this year, so we need to know which campaign the nominator wants this tag put in!
  • Critical Role - Web Series: Zerxus Ilerez & Nydas Okiro — We've decide to split Critical Role this year, so we need to know which campaign the nominator wants this tag put in!
  • Critical Role - Web Series: Zerxus Ilerez & Purvan Suul — We've decide to split Critical Role this year, so we need to know which campaign the nominator wants this tag put in!
  • Critical Role - Web Series: Zerxus Ilerez/Evandrin Alterra — We've decide to split Critical Role this year, so we need to know which campaign the nominator wants this tag put in!
  • DCU (Comics): WB: Outsider POV on Gotham City (DC Comics) — We don't want to approve a worldbuilding tag that would require a creator to use a certain point of view, so we're looking to rephrase this tag. Something like "WB: Public Opiinon About Gotham in Non-Gotham Places" maybe?
  • Divinity: Original Sin (Video Games): WB: Godwoken (Divinity: Original Sin) — This seems to be a group of characters! We would like to accept this as Solo: Godwoken or help the nominator revise this tag so that it focuses on what kind of worldbuilding they want about the Godwoken.
  • Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim: WB: What running a faction actually entails (Skyrim) — We love the concept of this WB tag, but want to make sure that what it's asking for is as clear as possible. We would like to accept as something like WB: Logistics Of Running A Fraction, or maybe something about the workload of fraction leaders?
  • Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim: WB: Whiterun City - what it's like when not limited by the game engine (Skyrim) — We think we know what you mean, but we'd rather WB tags ask for the worldbuilding they want directly. How would the nominator feel about "WB: Whiterun City As Described In Lore/Dialogue"?
  • Friends at the Table (Podcast): WB: Zevunzolia (FatT) — Sorry, we're finding it hard to get concrete details about this fandom! Is this a location?
  • Jupiter Ascending: WB: Public Reaction to Jupiter refusing to sell Regenex from Earth (Jupiter Ascending) — Worldbuilding tags need to be canonical and we weren't able to confirm this one. Could the nominator confirm that this is a canon event?
  • Original Work: Desperate Supervillain Whose Life is in Danger&Superhero He Reluctantly Goes to For Help (OW) — The & sign needs spaces on either side, but adding spaces makes this longer than 100 characters, so we can't accept this nomination in its current form. Could the nominator please come up with a shorter version?
  • Original Work: Dragon&Princess trying to steal Dragon's Treasure&Knight who doesn't want to rescue princess (OW) — The & sign needs spaces on either side, but adding spaces makes this longer than 100 characters, so we can't accept this nomination in its current form. Could the nominator please come up with a shorter version?
  • Original Work: Mad Scientist(F) &Her Beleaguered Lab Assistant &Her Rival, a Witch(F) & The Witch's Familiar (OW) — The & sign needs spaces on either side, but adding spaces makes this longer than 100 characters, so we can't accept this nomination in its current form. Could the nominator please come up with a shorter version? Also, we can't accept tags with commas in them because of the way AO3 works.
  • Original Work: Superhero with a day job at a coffee shopSupervillain who's a regular (OW) — Relationship tags need either & or / and this one doesn't have either! Could the nominator tell us what they were thinking?
  • Q.E.D. (All Media Types): WB: Case Aftermath (Q.E.D.) — First of all, I can't find the AO3 canonical(s) for this fandom. Is it new to the archive, or am I not looking hard enough? We also want to know if you're certain you need/want All Media Types -- what kind of media types does that cover? Is it just an anime and manga? Finally, about the tag itself: this is a little too vague! What specific worldbuilding are you hoping to see about the case, or cases? For example, are you interested in public opinion, or are you more interested in crime scene clean up, or something else?
  • Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: WB: Dax's role in Bajoran religion as co-discoverer of the wormhole (ST: DS9) — Worldbuilding tags can't be specifically about one character because then they're more like prompts that should be in optional details! Could the nominator help us rework this nomination to a WB tag that focuses on the Bajoran religion's perception/handling of the wormhole and its dsicovery in general?
  • Star Trek: Lower Decks: WB: Second-contact missions for events in other series (Lower Decks) — Because this tag requires knowledge of other Star Trek series, we are going to accept it into Crossover Fandom as "WB: Second-contact missions (Lower Decks ensemble) for events in other series (Any Star Trek)" but we are also willing to add a tag like "WB: Second-contact missions after another crew has made first contact (Lower Decks)" to the Lower Decks fandom.
  • Star Wars - All Media Types: Ahsoka Tano/Rennax Omani (SW AMT) — Star Wars - All Media Types is only for Star Wars Subfandom Crossovers and very broad worldbuilding. This nomination either needs the subfandoms where the characters are from indicated (must be two different subfandoms to stay in this crossover section) or to be moved to a star wars subfandom where they all appear.
  • Star Wars - All Media Types: Ahsoka Tano/Trace Martez/Rennax Omani (SW AMT) — Star Wars - All Media Types is only for Star Wars Subfandom Crossovers and very broad worldbuilding. • Star Wars - All Media Types: Din Djarin/Plo Koon (SW AMT) — Star Wars - All Media Types is only for Star Wars Subfandom Crossovers and very broad worldbuilding. This nomination either needs the subfandoms where the characters are from indicated (must be two different subfandoms to stay in this crossover section) or to be moved to a star wars subfandom where they all appear.
  • Star Wars - All Media Types: Glitch/Dogma (SW AMT) — Star Wars - All Media Types is only for Star Wars Subfandom Crossovers and very broad worldbuilding. This nomination either needs the subfandoms where the characters are from indicated (must be two different subfandoms to stay in this crossover section) or to be moved to a star wars subfandom where they all appear.
  • Star Wars - All Media Types: Jordan Smythe/Chase Wilsorr (SW AMT) — Star Wars - All Media Types is only for Star Wars Subfandom Crossovers and very broad worldbuilding. This nomination either needs the subfandoms where the characters are from indicated (must be two different subfandoms to stay in this crossover section) or to be moved to a star wars subfandom where they all appear.
  • Star Wars - All Media Types: Leia Organa & Creator's Choice of Jedi (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) — Do you want Leia from the Original Trilogy, Sequel Trilogy, a book/comic in legends, a videogame, or a non-legends book/comic?
  • Star Wars - All Media Types: Luke Skywalker & Creator's Choice of Jedi (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) — Do you want Luke from the Original Trilogy, Sequel Trilogy, a TV show, a book/comic in legends, a videogame, or a non-legends book/comic?

This nomination either needs the subfandoms where the characters are from indicated (must be two different subfandoms to stay in this crossover section) or to be moved to a star wars subfandom where they all appear.
  • Stargate - All Media Types: John Sheppard & Atlantis (SG AMT) — Is "Atlantis" the canonical location, and if so is that location canonically sentient?

Ao3 tagset nominations

  • Jane Unlimited - Kristin Cashore: WB: Jane's umbrellas (Jane Unlimited) — This nomination appears to only apply to one character (Jane). Is this correct, or does "Jane's umbrellas" mean something besides the obivous?
  • Star Wars (Marvel Comics): All tags — Is this fandom one that should be merged with Star Wars: Legends Comics, or does it refer to non-legends comics?

Rejected Tags

Google Forms nominations

  • Crossover Fandom: Archer & Pike & Kirk & Harriman & Garrett & Picard (Star Trek TV) — This nomination needs the Star Trek series where each character is from indicated (must be at least two different fandoms/subfandoms between them). We also usually require full names for all characters, unless an exception is deemed appropriate. Please help us find a version of this tag that follows the nominations guidelines and is under 100 characters.
  • Crossover Fandom: Archer & Pike & Kirk & Picard & Sisko & Janeway & Burnham (Star Trek TV) — This nomination needs the Star Trek series where each character is from indicated (must be at least two different fandoms/subfandoms between them). We also usually require full names for all characters, unless an exception is deemed appropriate. Please help us find a version of this tag that follows the nominations guidelines and is under 100 characters.
  • Dragon Quest XI: Camus | Eric & Creator's Choice of Canon Character (Dragon Quest XI — "& Other(s)" isn't phrasing we're accepting in tags for this exchange. We have accepted as "Camus | Eric & Creator's Choice of Canon Character"
  • Jem & The Holograms (Comics): Any queer character (J&tH Comics) — There's really no easy way for us to check which characters in any given canon are queer, nor is there any way to be sure that the characters we decide are queer when researching are 100% for sure the character(s) that the fandoim in general or requester in specific agree are queer. Therefore, we cannot accept this tag.
  • WB: Headspace and its attachment to Sunny's mental wellness (OMORI): WB: Headspace (OMORI) — Worldbuilding tags need apply to more than one character and cannot function as prompts for themes or plots. We will accept this tag into the tagset as "WB: Headspace" and the second half of the tag can be included in optional details as a prompt.
  • Q.E.D. (All Media Types): WB: Implied Actions Sou has Taken (Q.E.D.) — Worldbuilding tags need to apply to more than one character. We would be willing to put in a Solo: Touma Sou tag for you so that you can request this kind of thing as a prompt in your optional details!
  • Q.E.D. (All Media Types): WB: Sou's Math (Q.E.D.) — Worldbuilding tags need to apply to more than one character. We would be willing to put in a Solo: Touma Sou tag for you so that you can request this kind of thing as a prompt in your optional details!
  • Star Trek: Lower Decks: Original Self-Insert Character & Creator's Choice of Cerritos Crew (Lower Decks) — We can't accept a tag that would require a creator to make a self-insertion work. Nothing against self-inserts, they're loads of fun, but exchanges aren't really the right place for it. Sorry! If the nominator would like us to accept as "Original Character" only, we can do that.
  • The Mummy (Movies 1999-2008): WB: Medjai Culture, History, and Religion (The Mummy) — We can't have commas in tags on AO3! We'll accept this as WB: Medjai Culture/History/Religion (The Mummy)

Ao3 tagset nominations

  • Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling: Solo: Hogwarts (HP - JKR) — This has been accepted as "WB: Hogwarts (HP - JKR)" but you are welcome to prompt for sentient Hogwarts.

WB: Zevunzolia (FatT)
Yes, it's a location!

a relatively easy citation (see the transcript of that episode for a lot more about Zevunzolia)
Wrights of the Seventh Sun: A secret society dedicated to the construction of Zevunzolia, whatever the cost. Their motivations are many: Some believe that the Devils ought to have continued climbing whent hey escaped hell, that this was not the paradise earned. Others believe that Zevunzolia is telos of telos, the end-cause of all end-causes, and thus will inevitably bring itself into being. And given that, to do anything but aid it is to risk exclusion from it, or worse.

Not the nominator, but for the Friends at the Table nom, yes, Zevunzolia is a location. It's a semi-theoretical city (a character goes there and objects can move between it and the canon setting, but it doesn't exist in the main canon universe yet) 1that transcends multiple realities.

Edit: also not the nominator, but for the Stargate nom, Atlantis is not canonically sentient (though that fanon is supported by some subtext in canon)

Again not the nominator, but what question did you mean to ask about this nomination?

I used Star Wars (Marvel Comics) to refer to comics that are canon in the current continuity (unlike Legends) and specifically the ones published by Marvel.

I used the tag for the 2016 run of Dr Aphra and the standalone Star Wars Annual #2.

I'm the Bridgerton nommer! In the universe of Bridgerton, Regency England has basically achieved racial equality because George III married a Black woman, Queen Charlotte (the historical marriage is actual history, Queen Charlotte's race is a Bridgerton thing). I was hoping for works exploring how these subsequent changes in racial politics in England came about. I was trying to leave it broad, but if you think it's confusing even with canon knowledge I am happy to have it rephrased!

I am not the nominator but all of the Critical Role - Web Series tags are from one of the Exandria Unlimited mini-campaigns called "Calamity." So I don't know how you'd want to punctuate it but something like "Critical Role: Exandria Unlimited - Calamity" or "Critical Role's Exandria Unlimited: Calamity" would work.

I am not the nominator, but in Bridgerton Queen Charlotte is Black and her marriage to George III caused an alternate timeline where people of colour are more accepted in British society than in the real life 1800s.

Also not the nominator, but yeah, they're all Calamity tags. Calamity itself is already in the tagset under "Exandria Unlimited: Calamity (Webseries)" so I'd presume those tags would go under there.

The Evandrin Alterra/Zerxus Illerez, Laerryn Coramar-Seelie/Loquatius Seelie, and Zerxus Ilerez & Nydas Okiro tags are also in the tagset under that Calmity heading already.

nominator here for "WB: Godwoken (Divinity: Original Sin)" - i was thinking of godwoken as a characteristic and had trouble extrapolating/elaborating - i was thinking a similar feel as "marked by the outsider (dishonored)"

maybe "WB: Selection Process for Godwoken" referring to the process for which a god selects their champion, who are thereby referred to as "Godwoken" would be better?

if not, the solo tag can also work!

In Jane, Unlimited, Jane makes umbrellas as a hobby, and gives them to people. They're deeply significant in terms of the structure of the story, and different timelines affect what umbrellas she makes and what happens to them.

Nominator here. WB: Public Opinion About Gotham in Non-Gotham Places sounds like a excellent alternative, thank you. Or even 'WB: Public Opinion About Gotham' would work.

Not the nominator.
For John Sheppard & Atlantis, Atlantis is the canonical location, but is not canonically sentient, but commonly fanon'd as an AI/other entity. I guess a WB alternative to that pairing might be 'WB: characters relationship with/exploration of the city of Altantis'??

Hi nominator here (so sorry I forgot to disambiguate my Star Wars all media types nominations!)

Ahsoka Tano/Rennax Omani should be Ahsoka Tano(SW:TCW)/Rennax Omani(SW: Legends Comics): Ahsoka is from the clone wars and Rennax is from a legends comic

Ahsoka Tano/Trace Martez/Rennax Omani Should be Ahsoka Tano(SW:TCW)/Trace Martez(SW:TCW)/Rennax Omani(SW: Legends Comics): Ahsoka and Trace are both from the clone wars while Rennax is from a legends comic

Crosshair/Glitch/Hunter/Tech/Wrecker Should be Crosshair(SW:TBB)/Glitch(SW: Legends Comics)/Hunter(SW:TBB)/Tech(SW:TBB)/Wrecker(SW:TBB): Crosshair, Hunter, Tech, and Wrecker are all from The Bad Batch while Glitch is from a Legends Comic

Din Djarin/Plo Koon should be Din Djarin(The Mandalorian)/Plo Koon(SW:TCW): Din is from The Mandalorian while Plo is from The Clone Wars

Glitch/Dogma should be Glitch(SW: Legends Comics)/Dogma(SW:TCW): Glitch is from a Legends Comic and Dogma is from The Clone Wars

Trace Martez/Rennax Omani should be Trace Martez(SW:TCW)/Rennax Omani(SW: Legends Comics): Trace is from The Clone Wars and Rennax is from a Legends Comic

Each of the tags I Nominated includes at least two characters from separate star wars canons that have not ever appeared together :D

As the Solo: Hogwarts nominator, I have to admit I find this decision a bit frustrating, because requesting WB: Hogwarts with prompts for 'sentient Hogwarts' does not, in fact, guarantee the same degree of matching as requesting the former tag!

It also makes me wonder where you would draw the line - would Solo: Crookshanks have been accepted? What about Solo: Giant Squid or Solo: Whomping Willow or Solo: Flying Ford Anglia or Solo: Room of Requirement?

(Also, based on the SGA rejection, I gather that e.g. Albus Dumbledore & Hogwarts would have been rejected, as well, as your criteria for
accepting relationships apparently include the canonical potential for reciprocation...which strikes me as weird, both from a transformative works POV and from a how people human one? Not that I had any plans to nominate that, specifically, but I guess I just don't see why it's a problem...)

Q.E.D. (All Media Types)

So I did all the noms and maybe this is a better way to clarify:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q.E.D._(manga)

This might be new to the archive since the fanbase differs significantly from the usual ao3 demographics. There is a manga--actually two manga series, Q.E.D. and Q.E.D. iff, with certain major editorial differences--and a live action, but no anime to my knowledge. (The live action is primarily faithful to canon.) The original manga is 50 volumes, and iff is still being published but there were about 20 iff volumes last I checked (English Wiki is a few years behind). There's also canon cross-overs with C.M.B. (which shares a universe and is by the same author). C.M.B. is a companion work, but it's a (completed) series in it's own right of 45 volumes. Q.E.D. + Q.E.D. iff is basically the same manga volume count as Naruto (and counting). I don't care much if the live action is counted, but I do want Q.E.D. iff stuff included!

WB: Case Aftermath (Q.E.D.)
The different cases are so different from one another (and the early cases are quite different than iff cases) that it's hard to say that anything applies across all of them. There isn't always a crime scene, even. I suppose "WB: Side Character Reactions to a Case" could be more specific?

WB: Implied Actions Sou has Taken (Q.E.D.) and WB: Sou's Math (Q.E.D.)
These do both affect multiple characters. Sou takes these implied actions because of something done to Kana, usually something done to Kana shown in the panels, not backstory. That's canonically shown, multiple other (minor one-off or reoccurring characters) notice and some of them even comment on this to Kana. Kana is the one who doesn't notice for most of the series. Maybe this would be clearer as something like "WB: Actions Sou has taken for Kana"? Though it's repeatedly mentioned as an observation by multiple other characters Sou wouldn't be doing well, pretty much most of what he does in canon if Kana wasn't there (thus, also, Kana is always there in canon, she isn't a very frequent side character, they're duo-leads). Also, there is a pretty big difference in the way the implications get treated/included in Q.E.D. versus Q.E.D. iff. Would "WB: Implied Actions Sou Takes for Kana" be acceptable instead?
Sou's math is actually a recurring aspect to the manga--his math is the basis for multiple cases, if that helps compare it to something like Detective Conan. It's also part of Eva's Sabotage (that's not a single-person affecting tag either, that affects Eva, Loki, Sou, and numerous other background characters originally, then Kana and some of the background characters who show up when the issue is brought back up and then side-bar appears in a few cases). Sou's Math is hard to explain, since it's something that's more relevant to certain cases than others. Usually, we'll get the characters discussing/explaining it (mostly Loki, not Sou himself) for a page or two and then it moves back to the case at hand. There's been like two cases where it's more front and center.

Also not the John Sheppard & Atlantis nominator, but in this case, I think it depends on how you define sentient. Sheppard canonically has a very strong version of the ancient gene, and the city reacts to that and communicates with him in ways it does not with others. He definitely has a relationship with the city, although it's not what would typically be considered an AI.
