Nominating

Nomination is how you add things to the tagset! Mediums aren't matchable via Ao3, but participants can opt into mediums other than fanfiction. If you're someone who wishes to match on one of those mediums as a creator you'll be able to email us (ficinaboxmod@gmail.com) or contact us here on DW.

This post is where you should nominate any mediums you want added to the tagset!

If you're nominating a medium where the equivalent needs to be discussed you should only nominate if you are someone who intends to create the medium within the exchange. If it's a new length opt-in, another form of something already in the tagset, or something that fits easily into the Rulesets anyone can nominate.

When nominating a medium, please include the following categories:

You may also nominate a medium with Unique Rules instead of a ruleset. In the interest of avoiding rules creep, new Unique Rules mediums should only be mediums that absolutely cannot fit into a ruleset and which have multiple people interested in creating them, or which can either be added to an existing set of Unique Rules or added as a variation to that section (for example, Murdle is substantially similar to Logic Puzzles with possibly the need for a + wordcount variation to account for the story section)

Medium: Bredlik
Ruleset(s): Poetry
What is it: a poem in the style of "i lik the bred". They are 8 lines long, use an ABCB rhyme scheme and (roughly) iambic tetrameter, are typically from the perspective of an animal, and feature humorous misspellings.

Other Info: since the poetry minimum is 15 lines for most styles, I think it would be appropriate to make the 1k equivalent 2 bredliks.

Medium: TTRPG rules
Ruleset(s): Instructions, possibly also writing for flavor text and art for any illustrations
What is it: a set of instructions for how to play a themed tabletop rpg, usually with character archetypes, a conflict resolution mechanism (dice rolls, card draws...), And some scenarios for the game premise, like "You're a bunch of bears, trying to steal honey".

Medium: typeset of a fanfiction, typeset of a recipient's fanfiction
Ruleset(s): probably Unique Rules
What is it: deisgning a loyout of a pre-existing fic to make it look like a real book. An ebook or a file easy to print and bind by hand as a book or booklet. May include creating custom chapter headers, scene dividers, cover art, illustrations etc.

I talked to someone who does this sort of thing a ton and between what you said here and that talk my idea is maybe to do it similarly to dress up game rules (stick with me here haha) where each type of art has a set value with a base "Got the thing usable" credit that scales up once for higher value (500 base for image credit under 5k, 1k base for over 5k of image credit).

+ front cover: 1k
(extra 500 words if includes spine/backcover)
+ custom chapter headers: 3 = 1k
+ scene dividers: 3 = 1k
+ half-page illustrations: 500 words
+ full-page illustrations: 1k
+ frontispiece: same as full page illustrations, 1k

If you think that will work, I'll add it to the tagset as "Medium Opt In: Unique Rules - Typeset of a Recipient's Fanfiction"! We're going to stick to recipients only for this one though since permission statements really don't cover this sort of thing.

Medium: Sheet Music - Arrangement Of Music From Canon
Ruleset(s): Unique Rules
What is it: Sheet music that arranges music (either diegetic or non-diegetic) that appeared in canon. Like TV show openings, video game soundtracks, OSTs, original songs from canons, or other. This is similar to but differs from the Audio category because it is not audio, but scored music on the page. The instrument that the music is arranged for would be up to the creator.
Other Info: For equivalencies, transcription of 20 seconds of music, same as audio? Easy to measure when working from a source.

A performance of the sheet music would be extra effort from the creator, so I'm debating whether to also submit an additional medium that would be Audio - Performance Of Canon Music/Arrangement of Canon Music?

Curious as to why Unreliable Narrator has been removed, when other style noms like Rashomon-Style Narrative and Non-Linear Narrative remain in the tagset?

Tropes vs Structures. Both Rashomon and Non-linear are narrative structures that can be quickly and objectively identified as filling the medium without needing to know anything about the canon. Unreliable narrator is a trope that can be presented a broad variety of ways, doesn't require any changes to the medium it's within, and would require familiarity with the canon to confirm the presence of.

Medium: Murdle
Ruleset(s): Unique Rules, variation of Logic Puzzles
What is it: a specific type of Logic Puzzle where you solve a murder.
Other Info:
+ Murdles involve suspects, weapons, locations (and sometimes motives), and you solve the murder from a set of clues (and sometimes, additionally, hints).
+ Murdles have a minimum of 3 categories, and a maximum of 4 categories.
+ Murdles can include a variable numbers of suspects, weapons, locations, and motives (when they're included). Minimum of 3 items per category.
+ Murdles sometimes include mini-puzzles, like decoding a message, or matching a fingerprint.
+ Murdles usually include a story-related intro and conclusion.

Any supplementary images drawn (such as suspects, weapons, and location cards) will be 3=1k

What is it: Material for use within an already established table top system. For example, stat blocks and attack info for a new variety of enemies, subclass description and leveling information, or invention of new magical objects or spells.

Just to make sure, is this a medium that would be limited to fandoms that have existing TTRPGs or would it still work if someone requested it for a fandom that doesn't have any TTRPG campaigns? (I don't think this'll be a big problem because a ton of fandoms have table top systems or "reskins", definitely more than enough for it to be a valid tag, just wanting to get an idea of how to answer the question if someone requests the tag for a fandom that doesn't have one)

What is it: A collection of artfully arranged images related to a theme, character, ship, or fandom. They often have a panel format, though not always.

Is this medium intended to be a drawing of a moodboard, or to be a moodboard more like what you'd see on tumblr with arranged pictures?

The former (drawing of a moodboard) will be allowed, though we should pick a tag that makes it clear it must be a drawing and cannot be pre-existing pictures! It'll go by the comic panel rules in the art ruleset.

The latter (actual moodboard) will not be allowed since I'd like to avoid most mediums that involve manips, photos, or screenshots as the main content of the medium.

After a ridiculous amount of self debate and querying my co-mod, what we're gonna do is that each spreadsheet, regardless of complexity or how much it contains, is worth 1k. Minimum is one In-Universe spreadsheet. I've added this to the tagset as "Medium Opt In: Unique Rules - In-Universe Spreadsheet" and will add it to the rulesets shortly! If we get a bunch of spreadsheets that don't seem to be worth 1k we'll revist trying to figure out a more concrete equivalency next year lol.

What is it: Audio remake of canon music. This could include arranging a vocal or instrumental version, possibly performed live and recorded then mixed/mastered, or programmed through a DAW software.
Other Info: Differs from the other categories (fanmix, FST, original fanmusic) as this is canon music being 'rearranged', possibly with different instruments etc. For instance, a vocal cover wouldn't fall into any of the existing categories.

Unfortunately this is one we removed for being out of scope last year. For cards the minimum of one reskinned card is fairly simple, and can essentially be an art request (similar to getting only one tarot card), but board games are both varied and complex and even the simplest board game is going to require well over 10k worth of art.

With the elimination of photos and screenshots, will you be keeping the "softer world" medium (the unique rules one) or limiting it to original drawing/art (the art rules one)?

The limits on photos and screenshots are the same as last year and not a change in the rules. If something was given an exception last year then it's still fine and our reasons for giving that exception still stand. If we decide to change the rules to be stricter and not allow those exceptions that decision will be made before the exchange and they'll be listed as removed mediums when next year's version of this post goes up.
