Pinch hits are participants who are without creators; pinch hitting is the practice of volunteering to make a gift for a pinch hit. These pinch hits are all due on November 3rd at 11:59pm EDT, but that due date can be set to later if needed.

Fic In A Box has a very unusual set of assignment requirements: everyone is owed (and is asking for) 10k of fanfiction, which by default can be given as one 10k+ fic or several 1k+ fics. Participants have also had the option to opt-in to other minimum lengths or to other formats of fanwork. The other fanwork mediums are given word count equivalents, which you can view on the medium ruleset post.

Thoughts and Prompts

One thing I love about this show is how well-meaning and yet deeply flawed both of the main characters are, and the continual strain of politics on their friendship. There are some intense loyalty tropes here, right alongside a lot of deception and mutual distrust and conflict. I love seeing how they struggle to sustain the fiction of an equal friendship in spite of the massive power imbalance between them, and how it becomes increasingly difficult to make out how much of what they show each other is genuine and how much is performance.

I basically love every single canon interaction between these two, so if you just want to expand on a scene or event that happened, or a different version of an event that happened, or a different time when the same thing happened again, or whatever, those are all great. :) I like the fluffy scenes where they’re just fooling around or getting up to mischief together; I like the darker scenes where their trust issues, identity issues, or power-dynamic issues take the foreground.

Prompts:

• These two come from very different worlds, and I love seeing them try to connect, successfully or not. I’d love to see a story about some instance of this — e.g. maybe Wai Siu-bou is willing to let the Emperor give him some basic reading/writing lessons, or teach him to play chess? Or, on the other side, maybe the Emperor is willing to let Wai Siu-bou get him drunk, or teach him to play dice?

• So there’s that one scene where Wai Siu-bou rushes to the Emperor’s room in the middle of the night, and the Emperor tells the guards to let him in, and then invites him to sleep there. Does Wai Siu-bou ever take him up on this offer? (I mean, it’s hardly the only time these two end up staying up late together in the Emperor’s quarters — especially since it looks like Wai Siu-bou, as the Emperor’s personal attendant, ends up at least temporarily with duties like helping him dress and undress...)

• I love all the scenes where either character gets very protective or solicitous about the other one, and as you may have guessed from my "likes" list, h/c is one of my favorite tropes, so basically I’ll be delighted with any excuse you can come up with for one or the other of these two to be in some kind of distress — physical, emotional, mundane or fantastical, however plausible or implausible. Honestly my all-time favorite fanfic trope is just your standard run-of-the-mill h/c setup where one character is ill or injured and the other one helps them recover or just stays with them while they weather it out. Plot totally optional. The Emperor is ill and summons Wai Siu-bou to his room because he wants company/diversion? The Emperor finds out Wai Siu-bou is injured and pays him a visit in his quarters? The Emperor accidentally hurts Wai Siu-bou during a wrestling match? Wai Siu-bou finds out the Emperor hasn't been sleeping well and wants to help?

• I feel like there are potentially any number of "trapped together" plots just waiting to happen here, what with our heroes regularly sneaking around together all over the palace compound, especially at night. It might be fun to see them sneak around just for the adventure of it, for once?

• I’d love to see a post-canon reunion between these two, maybe many years later, when they’re older and have lived very separate lives. Maybe Wai Siu-bou ends up in some new crisis or under arrest, and the Emperor gets wind of it and decides to intervene? How would they react to seeing each other again? How estranged would they be, or how naturally would they fall back into familiarity? How easy, or difficult, would it be for them to separate again?

• Wai Siu-bou seems really proud of his massage-giving skills, and rather eager to try them out on the Emperor — who, for his own part, doesn’t seem all that resistant to the idea (except maybe insofar as they happened to be outside and potentially in public view at the time). Further development on this topic?

Thoughts and Prompts

• I’d love to see what sort of mischief these two usually get up to when they’re not busy dealing with palace intrigue or national politics. They apparently spend time together in the Upper Library nearly every day, and the Emperor also seems to rather frequently invite Wei Xiaobao into his private quarters. What are they up to?

• It’s noted repeatedly that the Emperor dislikes being cooped up in the palace and envies Wei Xiaobao’s freedom. Meanwhile, Wei Xiaobao seems to have no trouble at all smuggling people into or out of the palace gates even in broad daylight, as long as he can dress them up as eunuchs or guards or whatever. Would he consider trying to smuggle the Emperor himself out for a few hours, in pursuit of some adventure, or just for a visit to town? Would the Emperor be tempted by such a possibility?

• Sort of reversing the above: there’s a scene where Wei Xiaobao has a talk with a eunuch in the kitchens and hears that as a rule of the palace, no "rare or unusual food" can be offered to any of the imperial family (because "if one of them were to suffer the slightest little sickness after eating it, it would be off with our heads"); the eunuch says he's worried that the Emperor has "the curiosity of youth" and might be perilously attracted to foreign and exotic experiences. Now, granted, what Wei Xiaobao is actually up to is a lot worse than anything the eunuch suspects — but regardless of that, this whole exchange kind of makes me want to see him actually sneaking exotic food (or really any other forbidden/exciting thing) into the palace for the Emperor (who as usual has to rely on his street-urchin friend to supply the adventures his attendants keep trying to protect him from).

• On a similar note, just in general I’d love to see instances of Wei Xiaobao corrupting the Emperor with low-class or forbidden amusements, e.g. gambling, cursing/obscenities, drinking, ribald storytelling, sneaking around the palace, etc. With whatever result, really.

• So, the wrestling scenes in this novel certainly involve a lot of, uh, entanglement and mutual gazing? And mutual obsession? E.g. "For both boys their daily [wrestling] bouts became something of an addiction: if they missed a day they became positively unwell." Which, apart from being a hard-to-resist shipping invitation, also suggests that they did, at least occasionally, miss a day, with... like, actual health consequences? I confess I want to know more about all of this.

• It would be great to see some kind of hurt/comfort between these two, or any variation on the trope. They seem well set up for it. Kangxi, in spite of being very controlled and dignified in front of everyone else, often gets quite emotional around Wei Xiaobao, and seems to generally look to him for support when he has any problems. Wei Xiaobao also has his own sources of angst, and on top of that he spends like 80% of the novel in some condition of recent injury or under the influence of some kind of poison.

I'd love to see worldbuilding related to places, cultures, histories, people, objects, or scenes in this canon. :D More details, canon links, etc., are in my letter!

Thoughts and Prompts

• I love the historical aspects of the novel, and am not at all familiar with this period of Chinese history otherwise, so any kind of historical details you can introduce into a fanwork would be amazing, whether that means sketches of period-typical costuming, architectural details or floorplans, a hierarchy of court titles, dice game rules, or a meta discussion of anachronisms in some particular scene or plot arc. In short, if you’re someone who has historical knowledge about 17th-century China and would enjoy putting it into some kind of fanwork format, please do!

• I’m also happy to get completely fictional worldbuilding! There are a lot of events and objects that get hints of backstory but are never fully explained in the novel. For example, what exactly is the history behind the impenetrable vest that Wei Xaobao acquires from among Oboi’s possessions? Or the seemingly magical knife? What’s the story with the German priest Schall, whose life the Emperor says he saved when he was ten years old? Backstory about Hai Dafu and the Old Emperor’s retreat to the mountains? What happened to the scholars from the opening chapter?

• Sort of combining the above, I’d love to see fanworks in the form of “historical” documents that treat the canon as history, whether from a post-canon or canon-concurrent timeframe — e.g. a memorial to the throne from Cao Yin, a page from a history text, or something like information cards from a museum display of artifacts from the events of the novel (Wu Sangui’s marble screen, the golden bowl Shi Lang gives Wei Xiaobao, the crystal dice the Emperor sends as a gift, etc.). Or other kinds of documents? Folk ballads about Chen Jinnan? The imperial doctor’s medical report on Dolong after his stabbing?

• I’d be interested to see journals, memoirs, or letters from minor characters who live in the palace complex (including random unnamed guards or eunuchs or maids), or other people who might be privy to information we don’t get in the novel. This could tie into worldbuilding about particular locations or items or processes (the workings of the Imperial Catering Department, the assortment of weird poisons in Hai Dafu’s medical box) or it could be an outsider-viewpoint angle for looking at either the Emperor or Wei Xiaobao (or their relationship, if you want to blend this request with my pairing requests—but I’m totally fine with just a perspective on one or the other of them individually, too).

• If by chance you’re just reading this prompt list because there’s some particular unconventional medium that you wanted to try out and you’re wondering if you could do it for this fandom, then I’d say as long as it fits the canon setting in some way (i.e. doesn’t require some kind of extravagant AU to make sense), go for it!

For this fandom, I’m very happy with both slash and gen takes on Kirk and Spock’s relationship, or with Kirk-Spock-McCoy as a suspiciously-intense-gen sort of OT3. I love Kirk being a mess—the times when he gets overconfident and it bites him in the ass, when he doubts himself or questions his own motives or fears he’s losing control, when he gets reckless and Spock or McCoy has to step in and do damage control. I love the continual tug-of-war between reason and feeling, as it plays out both externally between Spock and McCoy and internally for all three of them.

I love all the moral ambiguity and dubious choices on the show, and Kirk’s relentless obsession with the idea that mankind “wasn’t meant for paradise” but for challenge and struggle. I love Spock being eminently Vulcan, or trying hard to be Vulcan under difficult conditions, or being maybe not actually as Vulcan as he thinks. I love McCoy sputtering over either or both of them being idiots.

I also love pretty much any ridiculous plot device that results in Spock collapsing and Kirk holding him up or carrying him around. Vice versa is also good. Variations involving McCoy—also good!

PROMPTS:

• As far as hurt/comfort goes, I’ll take whatever you’ve got, whether it’s canon-typical crack-taken-seriously (giant brain-cell viruses! zapped by sentient electrical forcefields!) or something more realistic or slice-of-life (Kirk angsting over perceived personal failures or past traumas, Spock emphatically Not Angsting and definitely not having illogical human emotions or identity crises, McCoy having to practically force medical attention on his superior officers who think they’re indestructible, any of them hiding injury/illness because there’s a crisis going on and they can’t step down from their posts right now...)

• Relatedly, anything with Kirk having to make hard moral choices or reflect on them, conflict between official responsibilities and personal relationships, handling disasters, losing control of the ship... basically whatever you want to arrange to give him a hard time.

• I'd love to see some kind of Lovecraftian cosmic horror take (or Borgesian dark-magical-realism take, or whatever) on this fandom. Surely if there’s anywhere you’re going to find truly eldritch and alien abominations, or utterly mind-destroying unfathomable otherness, that place is in space. I’d be up for the whole crew (or any subset thereof) being part of this.

• For more of a slash focus, maybe something with Kirk and Spock navigating their rather different personal needs, emotional and otherwise. One of the things I really enjoy on the show is how both of them seem so highly attuned to each other despite their differences, and how far each of them seems willing to accommodate the other, even if it doesn’t come naturally. But I’d also be interested to see times when these efforts failed, or times it went too far and became uncomfortable for the party doing the accommodating.

• Sort of related to the above, I like the idea of exploring the interspecies nature of their relationship from Spock’s viewpoint, with Kirk as the one who seems “alien” and difficult to fathom. Granted, Spock grew up with a (very) human mother—but it does seem like his upbringing was essentially Vulcan, and there are at least moments when Kirk appears to be a genuine enigma to him. (The reverse, with Kirk having feelings about Spock’s alienness, is great too.)

• Post-original-series, the end of the five-year mission: the Enterprise is no longer Kirk’s ship, his crew is being split up/decommissioned, Spock is going back to Vulcan (WHY?)... I can’t help thinking Kirk would not handle any of this very well. How does it play out? (Unhappy/ambiguous endings are totally fine, though by no means required.)

• I really love the idea of the Phantom Bazaar, and was disappointed that we see so little of it in the film. Spooky underground city, caves, underground rivers, Stygian ferryman, creepy magical black-market bazaar, all in an ancient wuxia setting with shape-shifting and monsters... I want a whole miniseries just about this. Anyway, I’d be happy to see any story or other media that further develops the Underground City, whether in terms of its physical features or its culture, inhabitants, visitors, merchandise, history, etc. It seems like Di Renjie is already pretty familiar with the place, but we never hear anything about why. What brought him there before?

• More specifically, I’d love to see a post-canon story about Di Renjie living in the Phantom Bazaar. Is there any hope that he can be cured? Is Wang experimenting to try to cure him? What is Di Renjie doing in the meantime? Has he retired? Is he still solving mysteries? Is Wang teaching him the ways of transfiguration?

• Casefic! This could be post-canon (maybe Di Renjie has been cured, or maybe he’s just working at night and/or remotely from within the Phantom Bazaar), or it could be canon-concurrent, if you want to expand on the case that he solves during the film (or have him on some other side case at the same time, or whatever). Magic and monsters are canon here, so mythical or horror-tending mysteries are welcome!

• Please tell me why Di Renjie has so many hats. (I love all of them.)

• If you've seen the prequels, pre-canon fic, whether casefic or otherwise, would be great too. Di Renjie (with or without Shatuo) must have had plenty of other adventures during the ~12 years between the end of the second prequel and being charged with treason. I'm open to his relationship with Shatuo as either platonic or slash, if you want to keep them together.

• Following from that last thought, one idea in particular: In the second prequel, Di Renjie develops some kind of mysterious illness that is never explained, and never really relevant to anything. When asked about it at the end of the film, he says it’s caused by a "demon" inside him. (The way the final battle plays out might lead one to infer that an internal "demon" must be a metaphor for hatred, but there’s never any indication that Di Renjie hates anyone, so... ???) Anyway, whenever Di Renjie has any kind of serious bout of this mystery illness, Shatuo has to look after him, which is an invitation to h/c if I ever saw one. How is Di ultimately cured?

Kirio Amy/Suzuki Iruma

I love how this relationship starts as this really wholesome friendship and school festival preparation, except Kirio turns out to be a bit messed up and wants to blow up everyone.

I’m okay with the potential story happening at any point in the canon. I would love both a story set before the festival while Kirio is still hiding his true colors or a story set after it. Maybe Iruma runs into Kirio somewhere after he escapes prison and instead of calling an adult, he tries to stop Kirio from causing trouble on his own. As for pre-festival story. Maybe some upperclassmen steal important parts from the club and Iruma and Kirio set out to get them back.

Naberius Callego & Suzuki Iruma

I love Callego for being a much better take on Snape than original Snape ever was. The second the series made Callego Iruma’s familiar I knew this was about to get good. And it was. I love how Callego slowly warms up to Iruma, even if he is still allergic to his and Sullivan’s antics. I love that Callego is actually a competent teacher who cares about his students, but at the same time he would rather eat a whole lemon than admit it out loud.

For prompts, maybe Sullivan ends up having an important business and Opera isn’t available so he dumps looking after Iruma on Callego for a few days. Or Iruma is struggling with studying since so many things are new for him, so Callego ends up forced to help him catch up with the material (if you are following manga inclusion of Balam is always welcome). Or maybe Iruma gets into usual trouble ends up stranded somewhere and the only one he can call for help is his familiar.

Crocell Kerori | Kuromu/Gyari

One of the last thing I expected to get this year was a canonical yuri romance in this manga, but here it is and it’s perfect. I love how it is pretty much built on mutual pining. I love how Kuromu loves Gyari, but refuses to reciprocate her feelings, because she knows that she needs to remain unattainable to keep their relationship alive, and I love how Gyari is never ever going to give up.

I would love to see more of the time when they worked together. We know it was love at the first sight for Gyari, but I would love to see how Kuromu’s feelings grew. Those hours they spent together practicing, maybe a not-date where they sneak together to scout a venue where they will be having their first big concert, or maybe a small contest that would sow the seeds for their future rivalry. I would love any and all of it. Also, Gyari doesn’t seem to be aware of Kuromu’s civilian identity, so I would love a story where Gyari meets Crocell Kerori rather than Kuromu. Does she recognize her? Or does Kerori manage to successfully trick her? Maybe Gyari makes a full investigation after hearing rumors that Kuromu is attending Babylys. I would also love any sort of future fic for those two.

AUs and ships

I love the worldbuilding around the demon world, so I would ask that if you decided to write an AU that it still incorporates demons. I would definitely love an AU where rather than getting summoned to demon world, Iruma accidentally summons either Kirio or Callego into the human world. Maybe Iruma’s parents try to use him as an offering, but instead he ends up bound to a demon. I would love to see Kirio excited to unleash suffering (even if his weak powers severely limit him in that regard) onto human world just to discover that he made contract with the biggest pacifist possible. Or Callego being torn between wanting to return home as soon as possible (he has classes to teach!) and wanting to somehow help the weird human child that just keeps getting into trouble. Any other demon-focused AU is also welcome. For Gyari and Kurmou, maybe one of them is a human who ends up summoning the other as a demon. How different would their relationship be then? I’m also fine with any sort of AU divergences scenario. Maybe Iruma keeps accidentally sabbotaging Kirio’s terrorist plans without realizing it. Or Iruma ends up summoning Callego more often as his familiar when he gets into trouble. What if Gyari also attended Babylys.

As for ships, I’d rather avoid any love triangle scenarios for this canon, so please focus on just one pairing per character (competing for Iruma’s attention is normal for this canon, I’d just rather not see outright romantic competition). It’s self-explainatory for Kirio request, but if you want to include some shipping elements into the other requests I also ship Iruma/Ameli and Callego/Balam.

DNW: explicit sex (makeouts and fade to black is okay), A/B/O, mpreg, rape depicted as positive (so no “it’s okay, because the other person enjoyed it/it was what they truly wanted”), trans headcanons, soulmate AUs, stories ending with surrender to fate/destiny, fourth wall breaking in canons where that doesn’t occur, character has cancer or other real-life terminal disease AU, word “queerplatonic”.

I would love a look into some alternate timelines or missing scenes. Feel free to go as tragic as you like for alternate timelines, or make a happy end, or anything in between. I just think the core concept of the show has a lot of potential in that regard. For a more specific prompts I would love an AU where Diva doesn’t disappear, but maybe she and Vivy end up spliting in some way (I’m sure Matsumoto could find a spare body or something). Or maybe a story where one of the Sisters ends up dragged into Singularity project (I really loved what they did with Elizabeth in the show).

For more worldbuilding prompts I would love a more in-depth look of how Matsumoto as more advanced AI differs from the past eye and how that gap is slowly being closed with each case he and Vivy resolves. Or outsider POV on how Vivy’s and Matsumoto’s actions shape the world. Them turning off the plant producing new androids and the subsequent suicide would definitely get coverage. I would love to know how the whole thing was officially explained. Are there conspiracy theories on the Internet? Sisters are involved in every major incident, would people suspect something?

AUs and ships

I would prefer no setting changes for this story. Any other AUs are fine. As mentioned I would love any look for alternate timeline. I would also love an AU where Diva doesn’t recover her memories and keeps helping Matsumoto while trying to regain them.

I love how this manga is a slow-paced fantasy dealing with loss and inevitable passage of time. And I love Frieren for being one of the best depictions of an elf whose long life actually affects their outlook on life and actions.

I would equally love the insight into Frieren’s present with her charges and the past with hero party. What other shenanigans they get into on their journey? What kind of weird magic Frieren pursued? I would love to see more of her mentoring Fern and Stark. I also love to see her interactions with the hero party. Maybe some more insight into how they fought with demons, since Frieren seemed to have picked up a number of enemies during that time. For some more specific prompts: maybe Frieren accidentally stumbles ona cursed item that erases her memories (or just her memories of Himmel). How would it affect her? What would the party do to help her? Or maybe a demon kidnaps someone from Frieren’s party?

Feel free to include any other characters, they are a colorful bunch.

AUs and ships

I’m fine with AUs as long as Frieren’s long lifespan is preserved. Her perspective is very much shaped by how long she has lived, so I wouldn’t want that aspect to change. One exception would be, a roleswap where Himmel is an elf, while Frieren is a human, and exploration of how both of them would be affected by having a different lifespan. An AU with mythological creatures or similar could be interesting.

I would very much love Himmel/Frieren, though I also enjoy how the manga softly builds on their connection. I also enjoy the budding romance between Fern and Stark.

I love both of them and how much Kusa looks up to Hakuro. I would love to see them have some adventures together. Maybe they help some other youkai? Or one of the onmyoji? I would also love a deeper insight into how Kusa became stronger after getting inspired by Hakuro. How did she try to improve herself? There definitely was some trial and error and I would love to see that.

Shiranui/Kinnara

That pairing came out of the left field for me, but I absolutely love the interactions the two of them had so far. I would love to see them meeting more, their feelings growing each time they see each other. I also feel like a story where they keep meeting each other in a dream would really fit them, as they would long to finally meet each other in reality.

AUs and ships

I’m fine with any AU. A modern AU with archer Hakuro and gardener Kusa would be cute. Or a dancer Shiranui and a musican Kinnara. Alternatively an AU where one of the two is onmyoji could be very interesting.

I’m fine with Hakuro’s admiration for Hiromasa being present as long as it doesn’t overshadow her relationship with Kusa.

I would love more insight into small, but murdeous Lloyd. Seriously I loved the idea of Lloyd originally being manipulated into killing Colette and would love to see Lloyd remembering his lost memories at some point (bonus points for also exploring the idea of Colette as an artificial construct). Also I’m always a sucker for Kratos and Lloyd awkwardly trying to rebuild their familial bonds. What if Lloyd went with Kratos after all? What would happen if they ran into each other again.

Stahn Aileron & Leon Magnus

I would love more of Leon’s utter suffering as he searches for a way to turn his best friend back into human, so people stop thinking he’s crazy whenever he tells his sword to shut up. I would love to see him reunite with Crestoria’s main cast and getting annoyed at how chaotic they are. Or running into Sorey again. Honestly, I would love seeing him interact with pretty much anyone, and grumpily helping them kill monsters/do charity/etc. Or exploring Stahn’s and Leon’s past. I would love to see their childhood and how they grew to be such a good friends.

I haven’t played Destiny, so please give me context if you want to include any elements that aren’t in Crestoria.

Velvet Crowe/Milla Maxwell

I thrive on the twisted codependency those two have in Crestoria. I will take both good, tragic and/or ambiguous ends for this relationship. Whether Velvet decides to forgive Milla or kill her it will be great. Give me all those twisted emotions, the hesitation, and pain both of them are carrying.

For straightforward approach, maybe the two of them stop in a town while chasing the last Incarnation and Milla decides to throw a party (because it’s some sort of festival, or maybe she found out it’s Velvet’s or Laphicet’s birthday and wants to make some amends however small). Or maybe one of them gets hurt during the fight with an Incarnation and the other ends up nursing them to health.

For some more levity, maybe Velvet and Milla ran out of money and pick up some side-job to have enough money for an inn. Maybe they work as waitresses and are both great and terrible at it at the same time. Or they have to take care of kids. Any other amusing job is also good.

AUs and ships

I’m fine with any AUs, though for Stahn&Leon request I still want Stahn to be the sword. I’m okay with Stahn turning human (or from human to sword) in the course of the story or being human when showing his past with Leon.

I don’t want Velvet and Milla paired with anyone else or Asbel/Cheria. Other than that there’s too much ships. Please inquire through the mods about specific ones.

I would love to explore any part of the setting really. I especially love the various interesting connections Servant have with each other that might not be obvious at first glance (like the fact that Iskander is also a pharaoh). I’m just fascinated by all the intricate historical connections. I would also love to see how some Servants would react if they were taken to Singularity/Lostbelt/Event they weren’t a part of.

Alternatively I would love to see exploration on how different the protagonists upbringing is from other mages especially given how bad they are at magic. We get some of it with Crypters (I loved how frustrated Kadoc was at the fact that the protagonist is even worse at magic than him), but I would love to see more of it. Maybe some Servants try to teach protagonist magic or prepare them for interactions with Clock Tower mages.

I’m fine with both male and female protagonist. Feel free to do anything from a serious character exploration to zany antics. I love both moods FGO jumps between, you can’t go wrong with that. Historical context always welcome. I’m fine for any usual suspects when it comes to plot ideas: be it training simulator shenanigans, “oh no we lost comms and are stuck in Singularity”, Moriarty scheming, to someone wanting to make Master happy in their own special, dysfunstional and/or possibly destructive ways

Some of the characters I enjoy: Gilgamesh (any), Mordred, Karna, Medea, Saint Martha, Ereshikigal, Danzo, Jeanne D'Arc Alter, Mysterious Heroine XX, Sitonai, Moriarty, Goredolf, any character from pairings section solo. Though honestly I love pretty much everyone in Chaldea except Columbus.

With the announcement that the Valdemar books are being adapted for television, I've been feeling very nostalgic for this world. Valdemar was my first real fandom - I recieved Mercedes Lackey fan club newsletters in the mid 90s - and it will always hold a special place in my heart. I love the setting, despite (or perhaps because of) all it's melodrama and silliness.

Prompts: I'm mostly interested in stories that poke at expectations and understandings of the world presented in the book without going really grim-dark. Outsider's perspective on Valdemar and the Heralds. I particularly enjoyed Alberich, Kerowyn, and other non-Herald's more clear-eyed view the strengths and weaknesses of Valdemar's systems.

On the flip side, from the inside, what about a story about a member of the Valdemaran royal family who isn't Chosen, either due to a lack of Gift or the Companions deciding that they had some more important purpose in a different role?

The books imply that prospective Monarch's Own sometimes have "unbonded Choosings" and only *really* Bond with the Grove Born Companion when they take office. (When Jisa is a child in the Last Herald-Mage books Vanyel implies this could be her future, and it's not clear if it didn't happen for political (keeping her out of the line of succession) or practical (Randale wouldn't live long, anyway) reasons.) But... what would that be like, and in what circumstances might it happen? How would the "temporary Companion" feel about it?

Similarly, what happens when an adult Herald is tapped as the next Monarch's Own? Was their bond with their existing Companion not real? Would the Companions argue about it?

In general I'm curious about Companion interpersonal interaction. They are definitely implied to have human-like conflicts and prejudices. How does that play out? Do they chastise one another for breaking the rules? How?

For what it's worth, besides Alberich and Kerowyn some of my favorite characters are Talia and Dirk, Kris, Selenay, and Skif. From Vanyel's time, I am fond of him, Savil, as well as Randale, Shavri, and Jisa. But any characters not in my DNWs are fair game, as are OCs both from within and outside of Valdemar.

The legend within the story, the one that Lackey swore she'd never actually write about - but I'm intrigued. We know that "officially" Sun and Shadow were cursed, eventually found magic to undo the curse but instead used it to free an heir of Valdemar from an evil mage and lost their chance to beat the curse, and were eventually chosen by Companions to become Heralds, which then (because Companion Magic, presumably) caused them to be freed from the curse.

But...is that really how it went down?

In addition to a direct take on the legend, I would also be game for any fic in the Valdemar setting that touches on the ballads themselves and doesn't directly include the prompted characters - a Bard character working on their own variation of the legend in song or poetry, an archivist trying to find the real history in the legend, a pair of starcrossed lovers somewhere else in the universe of the books relating to the great tragic love of Sun and Shadow.

I'd also be interested in a very meta take involving "Herald-Archivist Myste" (Mercedes Lackey's extremely transparent self-insert, gods love her) writing about (critiquing?) the ballads and the history if that's your interest.

Art: Love art that riffs off any of my prompts above or general likes. Any and all styles welcome, and it need not be overtly shippy.

In-universe documents/academic reports: Anything by Collegium researchers, Herald scholars (or Archivists), Bards, out-Kingdom mages or scholars traveling in Valdemar (or working off second and third-hand reports...), etc, would be great!

Worldbuilding prompts:

I'm really curious about the Imperatrix and the whole witch "breeding program" - and how the heck she specifically (unlike every other witch we see) is not under Alder's authority. How did that happen? How has she lost track of so many witch lines? Is this cultural myopia or is something specifically sinister going on with her or her office? Are there similar programs in other countries?

In general, I would love fic or in-universe reports about any tiny speck of alternate history implied by the setting and explored. For example, I can't find the interview now (will link it in my letter if I find it) but I read something last year in which the show's creator offhandedly mentioned that Sarah Alder's first and closest companions after the Salem Accords were previously enslaved witches, and seemed to strongly imply that most of High Atlantic society descends from former slaves, which is pretty fascinating! What would that have meant for society, both army and civilian?

What is up with The Cession? Are Native American/American Indian witches exempt from the Salem Accords? It seems to be something of a safe haven for witches who aren't entirely enthused about army life and a lot of Dodgers. The casual news report in Ojibwe was very interesting, too!

Literally anything you do with worldbuilding will thrill me, though. Truly, go wild!

Sarah Alder

What are all these 80+ military campaigns that Alder's been involved in about? Obviously the Spree have been a big part for the past 20 years, but before that? Were they all witch rebels, or have non-witches fought witches in large numbers? Does every country have a witch army, now? How has Alder dealt with them over the years?

Abigail Bellweather (& Petra Bellweather)

Abigail is my favorite of the trio, though I love them all very much, but her angst over living up to familial expectations and figuring out how to make her own way in the world has been a compelling story. I really enjoy her complicated relationship with her mother (and grandmother, and three dads, and Charvel) and would love any kind of exploration of those bonds, Bellweather family expectations/goals for leadership, and what might be next for her as she stakes out her own special project.

(Side note: I like Adil, and I'm fine with Abigail/Adil being a background component of the fic, but I would prefer that it not be the focus of any story.)

I live for tropey setups that push them into intimate situations and "oh. oh." realizations about how they feel about one another. Injuries in the line of duty, snowbound in a cabin, hurt/comfort, self-sacrifice (particularly when Napoleon Solo, Mr. Supposedly Always Looking Out For #1, does something very stupid and dangerous to save one or both of his partners, though I like this trope for any of the three of them), big fucking rescues (just like in the movie!), truth serum or other drugs, sharing a bed, etc. I particularly enjoy when they're trying very hard to focus on the extremely important world-saving case and/or punching Nazis but they keep getting distracted by how incredibly inconvenient their attraction to/affection for their partners has become.

Five times fics - whether a time loop caused by a mad scientist's machine, or due to drug/exhaustion hallucinations the same scenario plays out different ways, or a bunch of different themed incidents on different missions - are always good!

Undercover antics - I love the notion of the three of them all doing a mission with different covers (that might know each other or not) and having to play a dynamic that either differs from the one they share or reinforces feelings they're trying to ignore. For example, on a future mission it's Napoleon and Gaby playing at being engaged or married, and Illya "realizes" they're perfect for one another and tries (miserably) to "back off" much to his partners' confusion.

Napoleon does his best to matchmake Illya and Gaby and catches extremely inconvenient feelings for them both in the process.

As an UNCLE agent Gaby will be traveling outside of Germany for likely only the second meaningful time in her life post-film; she's also significantly younger and less experienced than Illya and Napoleon per their end-of-film dossiers. Despite getting one over on the CIA's best and the KGB's finest in the film, perhaps she has uncertainty about choosing the spy's life (maybe Illya and/or Napoleon even grimly encourage her to get out while she can) and she has to actively decide to stay with UNCLE (and her partners) when given the opportunity to do something different.

Any two of the three have to team up to rescue the third. (Doing a "three times" variation of this including scenarios where each pair has to save the third would be fun.)

Wild AU premises that seem interesting: supernatural/magical realism, a world where magic is known and they all have it, or space opera/sci-fi settings all sound like fun.

One of the trio gets blackmailed - perhaps with evidence of their unconventional relationship, or even just their feelings for one another - and tries to deal with the problem alone. (I could particularly see this being the sort of thing Illya would do.)

Post-retirement future fic - what might they get up to once they're too old to be in the field? What if injuries take one or more of them out of the game even earlier? What if they end up being pulled back to their respective agencies but only meet again by chance 10, 15, or 20 years post-movie?

Illya/Napoleon and Illya/Gaby are the main ships of the fandom besides the trio, but I find Gaby/Napoleon really intriguing - a fic where they believe Illya to be dead, or he's somehow out of their reach (a prisoner, gravely injured, on a mission that they can't interfere in without huge risk) and they hook up out of grief or fear or even in anger would be interesting. (And then they go rescue Illya, right?)

Worldbuilding:

What is U.N.C.L.E like? How does it function? How does it get off the ground and what kind of politics does Waverly have to play to keep it functioning and to steal out the KGB's best and the CIA's finest right out from under their noses? What kind of rules does it have, and how much do any of the agents, including our trio, actually follow them?

Feel free to crib from the TV show canon as much or as little as you might want if you're familiar - I've seen the first season and bits of the rest and enjoy it immensely.

I'm always curious about what Continental Hotels other than New York and Rome might look like, how the various supporting figures (Charon, the Sommelier, the various other contacts for weapons, money, armor, resources, and the like that John comes into contact with) fit into the world or came to be there in the first place.

I'm also really intrigued by the use of metaphor/code, such as the exchange between John and the Sommelier in Rome about wine that was not at all about wine. The very blurry line between the "hidden world" and the "real world" - at no time during either film any of the more public acts of violence particularly shocking to onlookers - they certainly try to get out of the way, and there are muffled shrieks a time or two, but how is it that all of this happens with absolutely no intervention by the authorities? (Certainly Jimmy is in the know, but are all law enforcement? Are the films set in a universe where there's general awareness and acceptance that conflict between the powers that be are handled via assassination? Could there be magic involved? Sometimes I wonder when watching the films if there's some kind of power inherent in being an assassin who's a member of the underground world that allows them to hide in plain sight...)

Anything that digs into the notion of The High Table further is interesting, too. Implied textual evidence in the films suggests that only major organized crime institutions/families have claim to a seat at it - how did they get them in the first place, and how did those disparate families/groups ever agree to such a thing? There's a subtle implication, too, that the High Table is a very "old world" institution and that the "new world" doesn't have much power - why not, when so much organized crime came to the Americas alongside immigrants, including John himself?

For All Might relationships, I do like All Might/Izuku, but otherwise I'm angling for gen for All Might.

All Might: I love All Might so much, you guys. He tries so hard to be a good mentor--he has this unshakable belief in Izuku and does everything he can to teach and support and guide him--but he also seriously screws up sometimes, whether it's because he doesn't know how to mentor, because he doesn't know how to be vulnerable, or because he just Doesn't Get how other people think sometimes. I also love his entire arc as a hero--first pouring all of himself into being the hero the world needed, the alternately fatalistic and optimistic twilight of his career, and then having to find a new path forward after retirement, both in his new life as a former hero and his life as someone who once thought he had no future. And I love the wall that stands between All Might and Yagi Toshinori--how he presented an image to the world and kept so many secrets from so many people for so many years. I also like seeing him interact with other pro heroes in his new capacity as an ex-hero and a teacher--it resets these relationships and adds a new dynamic that he has to stumble his way through.

Izuku/Tokoyami: Oh, man, I love the possibilities of this ship so much. Tokoyami's occasionally melodramatic emo darkness speaks deeply to my teenage self. I like that he's serious and taciturn but still caring, and I love the whole "noble darkness" thing he has going on, even when (especially when?) it sometimes goes overboard into silliness. His relationship with Dark Shadow fascinates me--how does Tokoyami deal with something that simultaneously is part of him and yet also has its own distinct sentience, something that is fiercely loyal to him but also terribly dangerous to him? Izuku's stubbornness can spill over into pigheadedness at times, but his determination to do good is so genuine and all-encompassing that I can't help but be fond of him even when he's being ridiculous. The two of them approach it in different ways, but they're both incredibly determined to be great heroes. Tokoyami's noble (if melodramatic) darkness against Izuku's "let me shine a beacon of hope" light makes for a great combo. That said, they've got a lot in common, too--genuinely caring, lots of potential, but forced to wrestle with very powerful, dangerous quirks--and that provides a lot of room for mutual respect and understanding.

For relationships, I'm into Kuroto/Hanashiro, Kurotaka???Shirofukurou, and any and all gen combinations!

Okay, yes, I love the sad, beautiful winter and the awful crapsack of a world with its cruel worldbuilding and the lovely soundtrack and the plethora of tragic endings etc., but my heart belongs to these characters and all their fraught, tenuous, heartfelt, heartbreaking relationships. Kuroto has so much goodness and gentleness and desire to protect a world that has never cared one whit for him. Hanashiro is in some ways so young and so lost, and yet he's also ruthless when it comes to protecting what he cares about and accomplishing what he's set his mind to (I wonder who he learned that from?). Kurotaka is so much mask and shield, playing at flippancy and casually teasing when in reality there's a storm underneath. Shirofukurou's single-mindedness is misguided and damaging and distancing at best, and yet it comes, I think, from a place that is half desire to do what is right and half fear.

And, of course, these damaged characters have relationships that are, uh, complicated. Hanashiro and Kuroto caring deeply about each other but trapped by their roles, forced by circumstance to hurt each other and themselves and those around them. Kurotaka raising Kuroto to look unflinchingly at a world that will kill him. Hanashiro and the love/hate he bears for Shirofukurou, who raised him with such care and such cruelty. Kurotaka and Shirofukurou being counterparts separated by a huge gulf, ostensibly the same in so many ways but vastly different in origin and purpose and outlook and mindset and character. There are just so many conflicting priorities, so many ways of understanding and viewing the world and their place in it, so many ways of caring that can't always be understood or aren't always accepted. No wonder so many things fall apart in so many ways. And yet, all the same, they do care. They do.

For worldbuilding, I picked up some obvious choices (other Savior/Kuroto cycles, whether this means Chihaya & Sai, bb Kuroto and bb Hanashiro as seen in uhhh certain endings, or a hundred cycles later ~~when the birds have well and truly lost their sanity~~; miniature gardens & other research, whether this means the creation/maintenance/collapse of garden, or previous or subsequent gardens, or just birds and/or the Researcher being in the lab), but I am game for any type of worldbuilding whatsoever (how Kuroto/the Savior/the birds turn into mythology? rituals the common people develop to try to chase off winter? seriously, go wild)

Kill la Kill is such a wild, crazy ride. Ryuuko won me over immediately. She smiles like she's snarling, she's tough as nails, she's a hot-headed punk, and she's also a total sweetheart somewhere deep, deep down underneath it all. I love the way she never backs down and won't take BS from anyone, and she's that way because she genuinely cares. And I adore Senketsu--how deeply he cares for Ryuuko, how much he needs her, and how earnest he is. They found each other when they needed each other most, and I adore that about them.

I love these four so, so much. All of them. I love Ishuca's inherent goodness, his strength of character, his ability to see and believe the best in anyone, and his occasional ditziness. I love how he's something of a Pollyanna who sees the best in absolutely everyone, but despite his occasional cluelessness isn't completely naive, perhaps because he's experienced quite a bit of pain himself. I love Blood's determination to be the kind of person Ishuca believes he can be, his endearing lack of knowledge about human life, and how he is both embarrassed by the depth of his feelings for Ishuca and yet absolutely unwavering and unyielding and unapologetic about it. I really like how he starts trying to be good because that's what Ishuca wants, but he gradually learns to genuinely care. I love how much they love each other, how they stick with each other through thick and thin, how protective they are of each other and how much they're willing to sacrifice for each other. Blood saying, "I'll live with you and I'll die with you," I love it, shoot me through the heart why don't you.

I love Wild's craftiness and cowardice, his book smarts and his rock-bottom emotional IQ, and how he's often scathing and snarky because it's easier than showing genuine emotion. I live for the fact that he's desperate to do right by Rapunzel while simultaneously being absolutely certain that he's utterly incapable of it. I love Rapunzel's wiliness, his soft appearance that belies a core of pure steel, and his occasionally scathing politeness. He seems docile, but give him enough reason and he can and absolutely will fight you on his own terms, and I super dig that. I love how desperately in love they are, how they're perfectly willing to lie and steal and cheat for each other, their communication fails and their deceptions of each other and themselves, and how they'll do anything--anything--to stay together.

Relationships-wise, while I ship both Konoe/Asato and Konoe/Rai, I like them separately--I'd rather not see a love triangle or Konoe/Asato/Rai. No ships for the Shaman, please.

Lamento is one of my favorite VNs. It's the type of save-the-world fantasy plot I grew up on, with really creative, sometimes unsettling worldbuilding, a colorful cast of characters (with love interests I universally like!), and a soundtrack to die for. And Konoe is so great, you guys. He develops from a scared, desperate country boy fleeing for his life to a brave, forthright cat who faces down enormous threats and basically helps save the world. He's definitely young and ignorant of the wider world, and he's vulnerable in some ways, but he has a steely determination, he won't take BS or break, and I love his dry streak.

Asato is a supremely awkward but genuinely good-hearted guy, with a naïveté that's simultaneously kind of charming and kind of sad, and I love how fond and protective he is of Konoe. I like how both of them are too sheltered and too alone and kind of lost in the world but find their footing together. I am always happy to see Asato's puppy-dog loyalty and Konoe's fond exasperation.

Rai is no-nonsense and confident and harsh and kind of seriously damaged, and I like how his icy personality doesn't stop him from having a core of pure fire; his moments of gentleness hit all the harder because he rarely allows it of himself. I like how his brusqueness can be a sign of (and a cover for) fondness and how Konoe can hold his own in the relationship; Rai is an intimidating figure, but Konoe isn't intimidated, and I think Rai respects that.

As for the Shaman, I think he's an incredibly intriguing character. He obviously knows far more than he should, and that knowledge (and the abilities that grant him that knowledge) sets him apart from the other cats. He feels like a presence who seems to exist in the world on a slightly different plane, slightly skewed from the rest of the cats--mostly in this world, but a tiny bit otherworldly. I love the air of haughty amusement he has sometimes, and how can be flippant one moment and dead serious the next. I am insatiably curious about his powers, his past, and what his true purpose is.

As for worldbuilding, all the worldbuilding options are good! Ribika history and culture, devils, the rise of music-based magic, the development of mythology and lore about the void, historical documents about Sisa, anythiiing

I am into any gen combination of these three, low-key King/Right-Eye, or any of these characters individually (e.g. backstory).

I love the main trio so, so much. I love King's crass, arrogant exterior and his equally crass, arrogant but intensely caring interior (buried deep down), and how he doesn't act like a king "should" but still takes his position seriously in his own way. I love how Right-Eye started out being kind of brusque and not particularly polite to King, but the moment he becomes Right-Eye he's 150% gung-ho loyal and dedicated. I cannot get enough of their relationship--how they constantly try to protect each other from other people and also from themselves, how they'll do basically anything for each other, how they are unwavering and unyielding in their loyalty to each other, and also how utterly fail they are at communication. I abso-freaking-lutely adore Shirogane, too. I love his ability to be snarky or silly one moment and dead serious the next, and how he's willing to knock King down a peg and how he so very obviously has a soft spot for Right-Eye. I also like the contrast between "immensely destructive weapon capabilities, sole prerogative over who sits on the throne, holds all the real power in the country" and "a floppy wolf pelt who could be stolen away by a pelt-snatcher at any given point in time." I love all three of them so, so much.

If going worldbuilding, I would love anything about the history and politics of Quatredina. How did the whole "Shirogane Fenrir chooses the ruler of the country" thing even arise? What sort of political calculus is being done by other countries trapped between Quatredina and Zephil? A history of Quatredina's monarchs? Quatredina is clearly an outlier in how its political system works, and I want to know all about it.

Silver Diamond is awesome on basically every metric. The fantasy worldbuilding is so creative, the art is gorgeous, the plot is a perfect save-the-world fantasy story, the wordplay is so clever and fascinating and plot-relevant holy cow. But mostly, I love the characters. Rakan and Chigusa are both just so fantastic. They're both so complex and multi-faceted? Rakan is sensible and clear-headed and down-to-earth, with a blazing determination and bravery that can border on reckless--when he's in, he's all in. I love the moment where he recognizes and acknowledges the fire he has inside him. And I adore Chigusa to an unspeakable degree. I love his growth from someone who sees things only in terms of threat/harmless/useful, to learning how to human, to the way he learns to care about Rakan and then, by extension, others. He charms me with his sincerity, and he is hilarious with his sometimes cluelessness and his sometimes obfuscating stupidity. And these two together, their relationship is so perfect. The ends they'll go to for each other, the way they trust each other and fight for each other--they've basically agreed to spend the rest of their lives together, come on.

If you want to go the worldbuilding route, there is so much to explore about Amato. More interesting plants? The history of number children? Mitama and the other serpents? Hoshimi-no-koto's past? Go wild.

Tenipuri was one of my first fandoms, and I still have an enormous fondness for it. The Silver Pair just stole my heart. I love Shishido's brashness and stubbornness and dedication and determination, and I love Choutarou's gentleness and politeness and how it hides an incredible power and a spine of steel. And mostly I love them together--Choutarou's loyalty, and Shishido having a soft spot for him that's so big it can be seen from space, and how much they pour into tennis and to each other in order to forge one of the greatest doubles pairs in the incredibly competitive world of Japanese middle school tennis.

The Platinum Pair appeals to my wicked side! ~~petenshi daa~~ I like the contrasts between Yagyuu's apparent stuck-up personality, proper demeanor and polite language and Niou's lackadaisical, laid-back insolence, but I am all here for Yagyuu being just as sharp and clever and wicked on the inside as Niou is on the outside. I'm not all about "the Switch defines their life," but I do love what the Switch shows about their relationship--the incredible amount of understanding they have for each other, their willingness to wield their Rikkai ruthlessness in the psychological realm, their mutual dedication and determination, and how similar they despite being so different in other ways.

Yuuki Juudai/Johan Andersen (YGO GX)

Juudai is quite possibly my favorite shounen protagonist of all time. I love his optimistic, genki, hot-blooded gung-ho attitude at the beginning of the series; I love his descent into darkness; I love how he claws his way out of the darkness and fights to come to terms with what he's done, and I love how, by the end of the series, he's matured and become jaded and lost some of his blind idealism, but is ultimately still a good person who still believes in goodness and who tries to do good. I also adore Johan, for a lot of the same reasons that I love Juudai--he's positive, bright, brave, determined and true. He throws himself in whole-heartedly and without reservation. And I love their relationship most of all. They believe in each other, they understand each other, they go above and beyond for each other--the sacrifices they're willing to make for each other, the absolute trust they have in each other--they're kindred spirits, like they were meant to find each other.

Fudou Yuusei/Bruno | Antimony (YGO 5D's)

I'm a sucker for characters who are instantly great friends, so I was charmed by Bruno and Yuusei's relationship from the very beginning. I love that Yuusei and the gang basically take Bruno in and accept him as one of their own, and that Bruno slides into Team 5D's so seamlessly. I love that even after the Antimony reveal, Yuusei refuses to believe that their friendship was a lie; I love that his faith was rewarded in Bruno's final moments. And that tragic ending hurts soooo good. On that note, I love the tragedy of their relationship, so I'm not particularly interested in fix-it fic where Bruno survives (unless you can turn it angsty or tragic in another way!).

-So the end Annihilation: Scourge was a lot of Tentacle in Rich's mouth. You could maybe expand on that. Were there a lot of tentacles penetrating Rich well he was in the realm of evil tentacle monsters for years? What if the tentacle monster of Scourge utilized more holes to fill Rich? I just really want Rich menaced by all the tentacles
-Richard/Gamora/Peter all love each other a lot, but they also have a lot of baggage between them. Will they ever be able to get together?
-Teddy is now King of the united Kree/Skrull empire how’s that going? How does Richard feel about this new united power. He’s brokered peace and brought Kree and Skrull together before to face existential threats, does he think this peace will be as temporary as his? Does he support or oppose Teddy’s goals?

- Young Avengers vol. 1 alludes to experiments being performed on Tommy and others in the mutant detention center, what if someone from that place comes looking for Tommy and it's up to David and his old X-buddies to help him out.
