Nomination clarifications are queries and updates about tags we find confusing. The goal of nominations is to create a tagset of unambiguous, easy to understand tags that will be useful to participants and solidly within the scope of the exchange.

Tags are separated by query vs rejection notice, form vs AO3 nomination, and then by fandom. You can respond anonymously to this post or logged in. If you are not the nominator but have relevant fandom knowledge about something, please speak up! If you have questions about nominations not covered in this post, please ask!

Tagset Technical Support

In Fic In A Box, we separate basic tagset maintenance like fixing incorrectly spelled tags or removing duplicates from the tagset moderation that requires making judgement calls. If you have a tagset problem or question that falls into the former camp, please head on over to the Tagset Technical Support post (link)! We've found over the past couple days that splitting these technical problems out into their own post does make it easier for us to keep track of them.

Google Forms nominations

• Avatar: The Last Airbender: WB: Airbenders (ATLA) — This is a group of characters, which has to be nominated as a Solo: tag. Alternatively, the nominator could elaborate on what kind of worldbuilding they want about Airbenders. For examepl, "WB: Airbender Religion/Culture" or "WB: Airbender Domestication of Air Bison"
• Friends at the Table (Podcast): WB: Other Divines in the Fleet (FatT) — This seems like a group, and groups need to be nominated as Solo: tags. We're happy to put this into the tagset as "Solo: Other Divines in the Fleet (FatT)" or, alternatively, the nominator could elaborate on what kind of worldbuilding they want about these Divines. Maybe something like "WB: Role of Divines Not Mentioned in Canon in the Fleet"? (I'm assuming that "Other Divines" means Divines who are implied to exist but not actually established?)
• Loveless (Anime & Manga): WB: Battle system (Loveless) — We can't figure out exactly what this means, could the nominator elaborate on what a battle system is in Loveless and what kind of worldbuilding they're hoping to see about it?
• Moon Knight (Comics): WB: Avatars (Moon Knight) — We're having trouble getting info about this that's definitely from the comics instead of the MCU, but we're pretty sure this is a group. Groups have to be nominated as Solo: tags. Alternatively, the nominator could let us know what kind of worldbuilding they want about Avatars. For example, "WB: Selection of Avatars" or "WB: Benefits/Drawbacks of Using Avatars"
• Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) - All Media Types: WB: Courting traditions of Nabuu (SWTCW) — We've accepted this as "WB: Courting Traditions of Naboo (SWTCW)" because we're pretty sure this is a typo/mispelling, but if there is actually a place called Nabuu please let us know and we'll put the tag back how it was.
• Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) - All Media Types: WB: differences between different planet's culture (SWTCW) — We've accepted this as "WB: Cultural Differences Between Planets (SWTCW)" because it seemed like a pretty simple rephrasing, but please let us know if this actually goofs your meaning in some way and we'll submit an alternate tag for you no problem.
• The Last of Us (Video Games): WB: Seraphites (The Last of Us) — This seems to be a group. We can approve this as Solo: Seraphites" or, alternatively, the nominator can elaborate on what kind of worldbuilding they want about this group. Something like "WB: Religion and Beliefs of the Seraphites" or "WB: Organization/Logistics of the Seraphites"

Ao3 tagset nominations

• Dark (TV 2017): Solo: Stranger!Jonas Kahnwald (Dark) — Nominator, Jonas become the stranger in a closed loop, or is the stranger just one possible future version of Jonas?
• Fallen London | Echo Bazaar: Solo: Red and Gold Gala (Fallen London) — This seems to be an event rather than a character or group of characters. Can the nominator let us know if this was supposed to be a WB tag or if this really is a character/group?
• Frostpunk (Video Game): WB: Any (Frostpunk) — Nominator, we just wanted to let you know this will eventually make its way into the tagset (it's fine for the WB: Any tag to be the only tag in the fandom, and the way you nominated it helpfully let us know that that's what you intended! but we just have to put it in last for tagset management reasons.
• 逆転裁判 | Gyakuten Saiban | Ace Attorney: WB: Spirit Mediums (Ace Attorney) — This seems to be a group of people. Could the nominatior elaborate on what kind of worldbuilding they want about people who are spirit mediums? For exmaple, "WB: Education/Training of Spirit Mediums" or "WB: History of Spirit Mediums"
• 闇の末裔 | Yami no Matsuei | Descendants of Darkness: WB: Exorcists (Yami no Matsuei) — This seems to be a group of people. Could the nominatior elaborate on what kind of worldbuilding they want about people who are exorcists? For exmaple, "WB: Education/Training of Exorcists" or, if the nominator is particularly interested in exorcisms specifically, we'd be happy to accept as "WB: Exorcisms"

• The Tarot Sequence - K.D. Edwards: WB: Architecture of New Atlantis (Tarot Sequence - Edwards) —

Ao3 tagset nominations

• 1899 (TV): WB: Individual Character’s Memory Simulations (1899) — Could the nominator elaborate on this tag a little more? I want to make sure we understand what it means before improving. My understanding is that this canon involves multiple similations for multiple characters separately, and those simulations are built out of the character's memories, so the nominator wants worldbuilding about the contents of one character's memory similation (as opposed to worldbuilding about memory simulations in general). is that correct?
• 1899 (TV): WB: Secret Networks Hidden Within the Ships (1899) — Are there canonically secret networks?
• 1899 (TV): WB: Visible Corruption of Any Given Simulation (1899) — Could the nominator elaborate on this tag a little more? Are you wanting worldbuilding about how/why visible corruption happens?
• Bleach: WB: Aizen's Experiments (Bleach) — This tag is not actually rejected but will show up as rejected — it'll be under Bleach (Anime & Manga) with the rest of the Bleach tags. I could explain why this one got rejected and the others got accepted and moved but it's just....it's just dumb tagset backend reasons that means it's easier to reject and then add in manually.
• Chained Echoes (Video Game): the seven true kings (Chained Echoes) — This is a group of characters and should have been nominated as a Solo: tag. Also, it's not properly capitalized. I fixed your other WB tag for you, but if you'd like this as a Solo: tag or if you can come up with a more specific worldbuilding tag, please submit it as a late nomination when we have that post up. You can see examples of more specific WB tags for groups in this and previous nominations posts.
• RMS Titanic RPF: J. Boxhall & H. Lowe & C. Lightoller & J. Moody & W. Murdoch & H. Pitman & H. Wilde (Titanic RPF) — Sorry, nominatior, per the nominations guidelines you can only have 6 characters in a relationship tag.

• When Harry Met Tom - The_Carnivorous_Muffin: All tags. — Sorry, nominator, this recursive fandom hasn't gotten enough interest.

I wanted to ask why my Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind tag was rejected as I don't see another version of that fandom in the tagset. I did nominate it without characters as I was largely interested in the WB: Any tag, which the instructions specifically said not to nominate.

Unfortunately there's no mechanism for nominating empty fandoms via AO3, as that's also how we identify fandoms where all of the nominations were rejected! You may briefly see some in the tagset that were accepted to make space, but they're all removed during cleanup as no nominations were accepted for those fandoms.

If you need to nominate in a way that isn't covered in the guidelines, please always contact us here during nominations! Otherwise there's a chance you could get lucky and we'll guess what you want and try to accommodate that (which is what happened with Frostpunk above, though it was almost cleared by accident several times so we will not be recommending that as the standard way to nominate those) but there is no guarantee that we'll do that instead of proceeding as normal.

I've added the tag for you! Since that's two this year we'll likely try to add a way to nominate WB:Any only fandoms for next year, but if you remember for the wrapup post please mention it there to make sure we don't forget!

Should we be concerned if nominations that were made through the Google Form aren't showing up in the tagset yet? I made several Original Works noms that aren't there yet, though my other nominations (submitted at the same time) are all included.

Could you let me know which so I can check on it? Looks like we have just one OW waiting on a final query reply, and otherwise everything on that tab is marked approve.

I wouldn't be too worried though, one of the big mod things on the list for tomorrow is a spreadsheet check to make sure everything marked approve in the sheet actually got into the tagset and that everything submitted made it to a modding tab!

Loveless (Anime & Manga): WB: Battle system (Loveless) - I'm not the nominator, but this should refer to battles between Fighter-Sacrifice pairs. They take place on an alternate plane where words have power; one half of the pair takes on the role of the Fighter to attack the opposing pair with words, and the other takes on the role of the Sacrifice and sustains all damage (which often manifests as bondage-esque chains or collars or something similar). It's a pretty major part of the series and is, I think, a tag that would be easily understood by anyone who's familiar with Loveless!

Dark and 1899 Nominator here!

Dark: Jonas becomes Stranger!Jonas in a closed loop for the majority of the series, though The Stranger is treated as an unknown and separate character until this is revealed at the end of the first season.

1899:
1) there is a singular shared simulation, and within it there are separate individual simulations based on characters’ memories that manifest as both dreams and as physical, visitable locations; what I’m trying to nominate is precisely as you said—world building about the contents of a character’s memory simulation.
2) there are canonically secret networks and passages hidden within the ship that the characters traverse.
3) yes, I’m looking for world building about why and how the corruption happens!

Nominator for the Moon Knight "WB: Avatars" tag here, and one, it's supposed to be MCU, not comics. I definitely selected the MCU version, so I'm not...entirely sure what happened there.

Anyway, they're both a group and a concept, and it's the conceptual angle I'm interested. WB: Selection of Avatars and WB: Role of Avatars, I guess.

Not the nominator, but you are correct that the "Exorcists (Yami no Matsuei)" are a group of people - the main cast is a group of co-workers in the afterlife who help trapped spirits and the like.

If you don't get clarification from the nominator (or even if you do, I guess) I would happily offer WB: Shokan Division, which would refer to their workplace setting. (Basically like offering 'the precinct' in Brooklyn Nine-Nine or Barney Miller.)
