Nomination clarifications are queries and updates about tags we find confusing. The goal of nominations is to create a tagset of unambiguous, easy to understand tags that will be useful to participants and solidly within the scope of the exchange.

Tags are separated by query vs rejection notice, form vs AO3 nomination, and then by fandom. You can respond anonymously to this post or logged in. If you are not the nominator but have relevant fandom knowledge about something, please speak up! If you have questions about nominations not covered in this post, please ask!

Tagset Technical Support

In Fic In A Box, we separate basic tagset maintenance like fixing incorrectly spelled tags or removing duplicates from the tagset moderation that requires making judgement calls. If you have a tagset problem or question that falls into the former camp, please head on over to the Tagset Technical Support post (link)! We've found over the past couple days that splitting these technical problems out into their own post does make it easier for us to keep track of them.

• Yu-Gi-Oh! GX: WB: Alternate Dimensions (YGO GX) — We already have a nomination for "WB: Dimension World (Yu-Gi-Oh! GX)" -- is the Dimension World alternate universe canonically one of many alternate universes?
• Yu-Gi-Oh! GX: WB: Duel Spirits (YGO GX) — Duel Spirits are listed as characters on the YGO wiki — are they sentient? If so, this WB tag might be better as a Solo: tag...or as a more specific WB tag that elaborates on what worldbulding you want.
• 文豪ストレイドッグス | Bungou Stray Dogs: WB: The Ten Calamities (BSD) — Nominator, I'm having a hard time googling. What does this tag mean?

• Dishonored (Video Games): WB: Outsider's Marked (Dishonored) — People who are marked by the Outsider are a group, so this should be a Solo: tag. Nominator, can you elaborate about what kind of worldbuilding you want about people who have the Outsider's mark?
• Doctor Who (2005): WB: Bad Wolf (DW 2005) — Hey nominator, can you elaborate a little on what you're looking for from this tag? Bad Wolf is kind of a character, which would usually mean this should be a Solo: tag.
• Dragon Age (Video Games): WB: Circle of Magi (Dragon Age) — This appears to be a group or organization. Nominator, what worldbuilding do you want about this group that isn't covered by switching this nomination to a Solo: tag?
• Evil Dead Rise (2023): All tags — The canonical for this tag is apparently "Evil Dead (Movies 1981-2013)" despite this movie being from 2023, and we also have had someone else get permission to nominate under "Evil Dead (Movies & TV)" Nominator, hwould you be interested in us accepting your tags under the fandom "Evil Dead (Movies & TV)"? If you only want 2023 we're happy to accept as-is, we just want to offer.
• Fallen Hero Series - Malin Rydén: Female Ortega/Female Sidestep (Fallen Hero) — The wiki seems to imply that Female Ortega's name is always Julia. Is that the case? If so, we'd like to accept as "Julia Ortega/Female Sidestep (Fallen Hero)" but if Female Ortega's name can be changed, we'll accept as-is.
• Honor Harrington Series - David Weber: WB: Treecats (Honor Harrington) — Treecats seem to be sentient, so this could/should be a Solo: group tag. Nominator, what worldbuilding do you want about this group that isn't covered by switching this nomination to a Solo: tag?
• House on Haunted Hill (1999): Dr Richard B Vannacutt & The House (House on Haunted Hill), Watson Pritchett & The House (House on Haunted Hill) — Is the house sentient? The wikipedia summary of the movie's plot makes it sound like there's an evil thing called The Darkness which is seperate from/possessing the house.

Oops sorry, I wrote a reply out for you days ago and then never posted! Thank you for your reply. I'm going to accept both of these as Solo: tags, but if you want a more specific WB tag for the Earth Cult please comment here, or on another noms post, or on the mod contact post, or email us and we'll add that for you! WB tags need to be more specific than just a group of characters, for example "WB: Doctrine/Philosophy of the Earth Cult" or "WB: Earth Cult Organization & Logistics" so that when we're checking a work for the WB tag we're checking for more than just that the group is in the work.

Hi, I'm the .flow and Yume Nikki nominator!! It's totally fine for the backstory worldbuilding tags, I totally get it (I think I nominated both of them as Solo characters separately but if I didn't I would love that, yes!)

Flowing: It's the way Sabitsuki accesses her "dreams," more or less. It's not really explained in the game (because not much is explained in the game LOL) but basically it involves connecting her brain/mind(?) to her computer, which yes is apparently a special computer. If you'd rather just accept that one, you can forgo the "Sabitsuki's Computer" WB tag! I was thinking of requesting maybe studies/documents on how flowing works, what it is, etc.

Madotsuki's Diary: Yes, she does have a dream diary in the game! She writes in it to save her progress, which I assume is meant to imply she notes down her dreams in her diary. However I thiiink there's a medium for "Character's Sketchbook/Diary" so if you want to forgo that one, that's okay, I'll probably request the medium either way.

Hello, the GX nominator! When I put in WB: Alternate Dimensions, the Dimension World tag wasn’t in the tagset yet. However, there are multiple alternate dimensions! I can name at least two. So it can probably still go as a separate tag!

As for WB: Duel Spirits, Duel Spirits are sometimes characters, true, but that’s not what I’m really trying to get at with this tag. Duel Spirits in the anime are like… the spirits of Duel Monsters? Judai and later Johan specifically can see them, but most characters can’t see them unless they’re in one of the alternate dimensions they’re from. What I’m interested in isn’t, say, a story about Winged Kuriboh hanging out with the Crystal Beasts (although I say that and that sounds delightful maybe I’ll nominate other tags to get that), but instead worldbuilding about what, exactly, duel spirits are, why they’re like that, what causes certain people to see them, how they interact with the alternate dimensions, how they interact with the game, etc. I feel like the tag as I have it is probably the clearest way to say that? However, if you need alternate phrasing, maybe something like WB: Duel Spirit Mechanics would work?

For Duel Monsters: you've actually hit on exactly why we don't allow just group names to be WB tags, since we want to make sure people requesting WB tags actually get some worldbuilding. "WB: Duel Spirit Mechanics" seems like it will work well enough.

Yes, if we rejected anything for formatting on AO3 you'll need to resubmit (either with the correct formatting on AO3 if it lets you, or through the google form)!

Nope, no need to be concerned! The gform and AO3 nominations are processed separately so things may move at different speeds.

Persona 5

I'm the Persona 5 nominator - basically, Social Links is a mechanic by which you spend time with certain characters, including those who aren't playable. I'm using it here as a catch-all for any of the protagonist's friends who don't have direct ties to the events of the third semester and so whose perfected lives in the alternate reality aren't shown. I could expand it to a more general "non-Persona users", but that opens up the possibility of background NPCs with only a few lines, when I'm most interested in the characters who have as much of an arc as a social link requires.

So at the end of Persona 5 Royal, the villain (Maruki) alters reality to create a world where everyone can be happy. The thing is that it's explicitly his idea of what would make them happy - characters have their personalities rewritten, others make up with their abusive parents, that sort of thing. I'm interested in what this version of a happy ending looks like for, for instance, the the ex-yakuza who left to adopt a child but is ashamed to admit that to his son. Are there cracks in the facade, and does anyone notice? With that said, as I'm typing it out I would also understand if this weren't enough of a separate world to really count as worldbuilding.

Bungou Stray Dogs nominator here! The Ten Calamities (or the Ten Tragedies as it's recently been translated as in the anime, "Calamities" is the wording the manga translation uses) are a series of ten mostly unexplained events in the past of the series that apparently risked destroying the world/humanity. They've been mentioned a couple times in series now, but I believe only one of the ten events has been specifically named (a vampire plague caused by the character Bram Stoker - adding his name might help googling?)

Hi! I’m the House on Haunted Hill nominator, and yes, the House is a sentient haunted house, with the Darkness imprisoned inside it. Even while it’s imprisoned the House can still act freely, and Pritchett, the person most familiar with the building, talks about them like they’re two separate entities. It’s all a bit open to interpretation, but the House is very much more than just the Darkness, and it really is the House as a whole that I’d like to nominate, please. Thank you!

Hi, I have a suggestion for a change in the way a fandom is split for nominations! Currently there's an individual fandom for Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (Video Game) in the tagset. Since last year's exchange I believe the fandom acquired a whole-series tag (Xenoblade Chronicles Series (Video Games)), which I think Xenoblade Chronicles (Video Game), Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (Video Game), and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (Video Game) should be grouped under.

To explain: because of the way that the series has developed over the last year (DLC release with new story/characters), there are numerous characters that appear in multiple games, or interactions people might want to nominate across games. As an example, 'A (Xenoblade Chronicles 3)/Shulk (Xenoblade Chronicles)' is between two characters whose character tags are from different games, but appear in the same game, or 'Fiorung | Fiora & Nikol (Xenoblade Chronicles 3)' would be a mother-son relationship, but they never appear in the same game.

I think merging them under the whole-series tag might ease nominations for the fandom(s), and though it could result in the noms being quite numerous I don't know if there's a better way to account for cross-series relationships (happy to discuss if there are better options/any potential Xenoblade nominators disagree!).

Hello! Sorry, last time this came up in one of my exchanges I guess the DLC hadn't come out so I didn't know they were connected now. Since there are Xenoblade 3 nominations already in the tagset (a lot of them!) and it's so late in the nominations period, I think it's best not to move things around right now — there wouldn't really be time for me to query, get responses, announce the decision, and then for you all to nominate based on what I've decided. For this year, nominate whichever characters under whichever game you think makes most sense and next year bring the fandom split up at the beginning of nominations.

I'm about to nominate "WB: Campanology" for Discworld through Google forms. Since this is a weird one, I figured it might help to give a preemptive explanation: apparently, one of Terry Pratchett's destroyed draft ideas was a story about campanology as a means of communication. I feel like a creator who's inspired by this (and/or just really likes bells) could use this as a jumping-off point for a fanwork, especially in a multimedia context like FiaB; however, I totally understand if this is considered not canonical enough or worldbuilding enough, so if you decide to reject it, that's completely fine.

If a canonical tag isn't disambiguated should we disambiguate anyways? (I assume the answer to this is yes since I submitted a canonical which has no disambiguation and it was rejected, and resubmitted with disambiguation attached.) I wasn't totally clear on that from the AO3 Tagset instructions, and since AO3 nominations will automatically supply you with the canonical tag it might be worth mentioning in the rules (since you have to explicitly ignore the suggestion).
