Nominations Guidelines 2023

This post is about nominations for tags that will be used in the fandom and relationship slots of your requests/tags. For opt-in medium nominations go to this post (link).

Before nominating, please read the "Nominations Guidelines" section of this post, even if you also read it last year. After you nominate, please keep an eye on the comm in case we need clarification from you before accepting a nomination.

How To Nominate

There are three methods of relationship nominations this year!

1) Fandom Transfer

Since the format of relationship nominations are not changing, we've been transferring the relationships/characters in fandoms from last year's tagset to this year's tagset upon request. Just head over to the Fandom Transfer Post and follow the instructions there!

2) Google form

All instructions are provided as you nominate, so you can look at our guidelines while inputting relationships! Go to the google form and follow the instructions provided to submit your nominations, filling the form out as many times as you want. (You don't need to disambiguate nominations when using the form; our spreadsheet will do that for you!) Your nominations will eventually either wind up in the tagset or show up in a nominations clarification post — please check back at this comm in case we have questions about your nominations. The google doc is anonymous. You don't have to read the rest of this post.

3) AO3 tagset nomination

This is how most people are used to nominating! If you're confident that you understand the nominations guidelines (provided below!) Then proceed to the tagset and input your nominations as directed. You will have 10 fandoms with 12 relationship slots. We will automatically reject anything that doesn't follow the guidelines below, but will query for other problems/questions. Check your nominations page and this comm to keep up to date on the status of your nominations.

Nomination Guidelines

All nominations should be correctly spelled and punctuated. If you are disambiguating (especially on AO3) then make sure your disambigs are correctly capitalized, too. We prefer Original Works and Original Characters be in title case ("A Really Hot Vampire/A Wizard" not "a really hot vampire/a wizard") but we will accept sentence case as well ("A really hot vampire/A wizard").

Fandoms:

• All fandoms are allowed, including RPF, as long as all real people nominated are famous in their own right and over the age of 18.
• Crossovers: Should be nominated under Crossover Fandom
• Original Works: Should be nominated under Original Work
• Megafandoms, franchises, etc: See below.
• Recursive fandoms: You will need permission from the fanwork creator to nominate unless the work was already nominated as a fandom in a past round. Additionally:
  • If the work does not have an established fandom you'll need at least two people who intend to request and/or offer it.
  • For recursive fandoms that were nominated in previous rounds and either A) had 3+ people requesting/offering or B) for which at least one work was created, we'll consider that proof of an "established fandom" and you don't need proof other people plan or request/offer it.
• Fandoms with - All Media Types, fandoms with & Related Fandoms, and fandoms that function as such: We prefer specific, clear fandoms that cover a concrete canon or section of canon because this both makes it easier to mod and makes it easier to offer/pinch hit. As a general rule, if your fandom already has subfandoms nominated, please contact us before nominating a AMT type fandom and expect to be queried if you nominate an AMT type fandom without talking to us first. (Which you can do! We don't mind querying you.).
• "Creator's Choice of Fandom" will not be accepted in this exchange.

Relationships field:

Relationship tags may have up to six characters. All characters should have their full name included, although if the name is very long or has excessive pipes it's fine to cut it down as long as it won't be confusing — "Percival "Percy" Fredrickstein Von Musel Klossowski de Rolo III" can be "Percy De Rolo III" and "Wei Ying | Wei Wuxian" can be "Wei Wuxian" as it's still clear which character is being referred to.

Please properly capitalize your nominations. You should capitalize proper nouns, for instance, and preferably use title case.

"/", "&", and "Solo:" relationship types are allowed, as well as worldbuilding tags, which begin with "WB:"

• / relationships are sexual and/or romantic.
• & relationships are platonic.
• Solo: tags are for single characters and groups.
• WB: tags are for non-ship/character/group worldbuilding concepts.
• You may nominate tags in the format A/B & C for a request about two characters in a romantic/sexual relationship having a platonic interaction with a third character.

If nominating via AO3, please disambiguate your nominations. Your nominations should look like one of the following:

• Character A/Character B (Fandom)
• Character A & Character B (Fandom)
• Character A/Character B & Character C (Fandom)
• Solo: Character A (Fandom)
• Solo: Group (Fandom)
• WB: Worldbuilding Topic (Fandom)
• Character A (Fandom A) / Character B (Fandom B)
• Character A (Fandom A) & Character B (Fandom B)
• Character A (Fandom A) in Fandom B

Tag examples:

• Elmo/Big Bird (Sesame Street) — these characters will be dating, having sex, etc.
• Elmo & Big Bird (Sesame Street) — these characters will be friends, neighbors, family, acquaintances, enemies, strangers, etc.
• Solo: Elmo (Sesame Street) — you will receive a work about/centered around Elmo, but other characters can appear.
• Solo: Muppets (Sesame Street) — you will receive a work about/centered around one of literally any Muppet, but potentially more than one.
• WB: Sesame Street City Planning & Zoning Ordinances (Sesame Street) — you will receive a work about city planning and zoning on Sesame Street, which could include any or no characters

Group tag and "Any" or "Creator's Choice" guidelines:

• Just to reiterate above, Solo: Group tags mean "One or more of this group" whether or not they have "Any" or "Creator's Choice of" in front of them.
• If you request an ambiguous group (eg: Solo: The [fandom] ensemble or Solo: The Avengers) we will assume that any possible member(s) of that group fulfill that request.
• You may request "Any" of a character type. For example, "Mikhaila Ilyushin/Any Female Talos I Employee". Similar to original works, please make sure any important information is within the Any character tag.
• Where there is ambiguity created by a nomination, we will likely side with the creator. If you want to be sure that you'll get specific characters, please nominate them by name.

Worldbuilding tag guidelines:

Worldbuilding nominations are for reasonably broad worldbuilding topics for elements of canon you would like worldbuilding about.

• What "reasonably broad" means will vary somewhat by canon, but in general worldbuilding tags should be applicable or related to more than one character. If your tag is very broad — like, "WB: Language & Society (The Silmarillion - Tolkien)" or something — we might check to make sure we're on the same page as the nominator.
• Worldbuilding topics should be concrete facets of the canon world (so, not fanon, not a trope, not a plot or conflict, not a mood or vague concept) that cannot be covered under a relationship, character, or group nomination.
• If you nominate something like "WB: Council of Mages" we will tell you to either switch it to a group nomination ("Solo: Council of Mages") or ask you to help us refine it to point more at the worldbuilding you actually want (WB: Council of Mages International Politics, say, or WB: Public Opinion & Rumor About The Council of Mages)
• If we can't figure out what your WB tag means or if it seems ambiguous, we'll check in with you! We want to make sure we can make accurate mod decisions about your potential gifts down the line and we want to make sure the tag is clear to offerers and requesters, so we err on the side of caution. If you think we won't be able to find much or any info about your WB tag by googling, feel free to drop us a note about it on a nominations post!
• Don't nominate "WB: Any". We'll be adding this tag to every fandom after nominations close, so any early nominations of this tag will be rejected to avoid duplicates.

Original works:

• Ships in Original Works should be nominated as Character Type/Character Type, with any additional details you see as essential for the ship included. If the gender of the characters is important to you, for example, please include it in the character tags.
• You may nominate other kinds of tags in Original Works, for example ambiguous groups like "Solo: Cute Forest Animal(s) (Original Works)"
• Where there is ambiguity created by a nomination, we will likely side with the creator. If you want to be sure that you'll get specific characters, please nominate them by name.
• We prefer Original Works and Original Characters be in title case ("A Really Hot Vampire/A Wizard" not "a really hot vampire/a wizard") but we will accept sentence case as well ("A really hot vampire/A wizard").

Crossovers

• For crossovers, please disambiguate on the characters and nominate them within Crossover Fandom. For example: "Varric Tethras (Dragon Age)/Nick Valentine (Fallout 4)"
• Crossovers where a character from fandom A visit canon B should be nominated like this: "Solo: Shang Qinghua (SVSSS) in Lord of the Rings"
• If there's more than one version of the canon and you care about which version you receive, specify that version in parentheses, for example "Solo: Shang Qinghua (SVSSS) in Lord of the Rings (Movies)."
• We know the actual AO3 nom page says you can put crossover tags in either fandom but please don't!

Nomination info for specific fandoms:

• As a general rule, if your fandom/subfandom is already in the 2022 tagset please nominate in the fandom as it appears there.
• Marvel Cinematic Universe nominations may be nominated under the appropriate movie subfranchise (Thor, GotG, etc) or in Avengers. If nominating in a subfranchise (for example, Thor (Movies)), all characters in the nom should have appeared in a movie from that subfranchise. Agents of SHIELD, Agent Carter, Wandavision, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, and the Marvel Netflix universe of shows are also all separate fandoms. The Marvel Netflix shows should be nommed together under The Defenders (Marvel TV).
• Marvel comics may be nominated by title or under the name of the appropriate Marvel universe (Marvel 616, Marvel Ultimates, etc). Nominations for “Marvel (Comics)” will not be accepted.
• Star Wars nominations may be nominated under the appropriate movie, trilogy, TV show, etc (eg, Rogue One, Sequel Trilogy). “Crossover” noms between different parts of the Star Wars universe may be nominated under “Star Wars - All Media Types.”
• Star Wars Old EU: Books should go under "Star Wars: Legends Books" and be disambiguated with (SWL Books). Comics should go under "Star Wars: Legends Comics" and be disambiguated with (SWL Comics). Games should go into their individual games either combined or split depending on what is normal for that fandom.
• Naruto, Boruto, and Dreaming of Sunshine should be nominated separately. Please nominate Dreaming of Sunshine as "Dreaming of Sunshine - SilverQueen (DFE)". Relationship nominations that involve one or more DoS character and one or more Naruto/Boruto character should be nominated under the fandom "Crossover Fandom".
• Harry Potter, Rigel Black Chronicles, and Revolutionary Arc should be nominated separately. Please nominate Rigel Black Chronicles as "Rigel Black Chronicles - murkybluebatter (Exchange Disambiguation)", and nominate Revolutionary Arc as "Revolutionary Arc - kitsunerei88 (Fanfic Disambiguation)".
• Buffy: The Vampire Slayer and Angel: The Series will both be nommed together under “Buffyverse (TV).”
• Buffy comics: Nominate this separately from the TV shows.
• Star Trek is divided by show and the Alternate Original Series is alone. Movie characters from the Original Series or Next Gen movies may be nominated under the respective shows.
• DC Comics: All DC Comics nominations can go under that fandom, but please disambiguate which version of the character you want in parenthesis after each character.
• DC's Arrowverse: Please nominate characters from Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Batwoman, Superman & Lois, and Black Lightning (plus the webseries tie-ins) under "DC's Arrowverse".
• Dragon Age: Please nominate under "Dragon Age (Video Games)"
• Critical Role: Please nominate campaigns separately using the tags listed below. Characters who have appeared in more than one campaign may be nominated under any of those campaigns. Nominations involving characters from two or more campaigns should go under "Crossover Fandom".
  • Critical Role - Campaign 1
  • Critical Role - Campaign 2
  • Critical Role - Campaign 3
  • Exandria Unlimited Prime
  • Exandria Unlimited: Kymal
  • Exandria Unlimited: Calamity (Webseries) (DFE)
  • The Legend of Vox Machina (Cartoon)
• Friends at the Table: Please nominate under the canonical Friends at the Table (Podcast)
• Dimension 20: Nominations should be split out by setting/world, plus a catch-all for the one-off seasons.
  • Dimension 20 - Spyre
  • Dimension 20 - The Unsleeping City
  • Dimension 20 - Calorum
  • Dimension 20 - Other Seasons
• Danganronpa: Please nominate under the canonical Dangan Ronpa Series
• Final Fantasy VII: The original game and the remake should be nominated separately.
• Stargate: Please nominate under "Stargate - All Media Types"
• DC Extended Universe: DCEU movies should be nominated under "DC Extended Universe"
• Assassin's Creed: Please nominate Assassin's Creed under "Assassin's Creed - All Media Types"
• X-Men Movies: Please nominate OTM and ATM under "X-Men (Movieverse)(OTM)" and "X-Men (Movieverse)(ATM)". The other X-Men movies should be nominated under their own series/movie title.
• Legend of Zelda: These should be nominated in their separate games, but please make sure that the disambiguation is unique to that game!
• The Witcher: Please nominate these in their individual fandoms, not AMT
• The Mechanisms: Please nominate under "The Mechanisms (Band)" with a disambiguation of either (The Mechanisms) or the specific album.
• Historical RPF: Please split these into subfandoms that indicates what timeperiod the nominated people are in. If there may be confusion about the identity of a nominated person, please be as specific as is reasonable.

Hello! Unfortunately there are a few barriers to accepting this nomination, although of course I would like to. I do think that the recursive works already created for it count as proof that there's an existing fandom (so you don't need additional people to say they'll offer/request it!) but there are still these two problems:

1. The existence of other fanworks isn't enough — it is, for example, possible that all the people who've written those fics are close friends of the authors so the authors feel like it's okay, but they wouldn't feel okay with some exchange rando writing recursive fic of their work.
   
2. I also couldn't confirm quickly that that tumblr blog is for sure the tumblr blog belonging to these authors, as it's not linked on their profiles.
   

To be clear, I believe you that this tumblr is the author's tumblr and that they're probably okay with recursive fanfiction...but given the amount of hurt feelings it could cause if we mistakenly admitted a recursive fandom that the author didn't want to recursed, the burden of proof has to be pretty high. There are two ways for you to get the proof you need:

1. Comment directly on the work, asking for permission for recursive fic, recursive art, and other recursive fanworks. When they reply, give us the link. Permission achieved!
   
2. Slightly more complicated, but find a place in their fic(s) where they've linked to that tumblr saying that it's theirs, then ask them for permission for recursive fic, recursive art, and other recursive fanworks via tumblr. Link us to where they say the tumblr is theirs and then to their tumblr answer.
   

For both of these asks, I'd like to stress that you shouldn't just ask about recursive fic because people might create other mediums.

I'm always so happy to have recursive requests in my exchanges, so I hope it works out!

Oooh as someone else who likes Friends at the Table, did you have feelings about how to split it up?

I'd personally go for the following, but I'd be open to hearing other thoughts.

Friends at the Table: Seasons of Hieron [all Hieron content including Marielda]
Friends at the Table: Divine Cycle [c/W, TM, PZN, PSD, and the relevant Roads]
Friends at the Table: Sangfielle [the most obviously self-contained one]
Friends at the Table: Bluff City [all Bluff City content, including Lives set in Bluff City]
Friends at the Table: Live at the Table [catch-all for the various one-shots that don't fit into another umbrella because I don't actually want to nominate them all separately xD]

Personally, I would prefer not to split Friends at the Table at all. It's not a fandom that has a large exchange presence to begin with, and honestly if someone is going to spend two request slots anyway (because they have wildly different DNWs or opt-ins for Divine Cycle vs Hieron, for example), it doesn't appear to be much different mechanically than splitting.

If the decision is to split, I'm pretty neutral on how it gets divided up, since I'm most likely to request Sangfielle anyway.

As another D20 requester, I personally prefer it when they're split along campaign lines (with stories that have multiple seasons like Fantasy High and The Unsleeping City collapsed into one each, and the other seasons one by one). If nothing else, it would make it easier to see which characters/ships have been nominated and if anyone is requesting/offering the campaigns I'm interested in.

Chiming in on Friends at the Table, thanks Shadaras!

Personally I have no strong feelings in any real direction and see the benefits of both. Since I'm only up to date (more or less) on Divine Cycle (specifically PZN and Palisade), for me it would be easiest for it to be split off whether as just those series or as the Divine Cycle.

That said, I do think we'll be able to adequately match based on the characters/relationships we offer and request, so it is no great loss to me if it's kept all as one fandom.

For D20, I think it makes sense to break up the different series. For the series that have multiple seasons in the same setting (Fantasy High, Unsleeping City, and A Crown of Candy) it makes sense to combine those multiples, but there is no canonical overlap across others, and they often have very different theming. I vote for individual settings.

Chiming in as per the nom clarifications post to say that for Dimension 20, I did like that last year's FIAB had it as an umbrella fandom because it's a catch-all way for me to request and offer things from a number of different campaigns without my fandom count ballooning, so my hope was to be able to do that again. But given that we're now on 17 campaigns, I also see the argument to separating them, so I'm open to that if the general consensus is to do so.

After having thought about it and read everyone else’s responses (hi back, FFG!) I wanted to throw in my two cents.

F@TT is a smaller fandom and fans seem to have a preference for one umbrella tag. All the F@TT stuff I would want to request is within one season/universe anyways, so I’m leaning towards the one tag.

D20 is a bigger fandom, with a LOT of different campaign settings. I also think the average D20 fan is less likely to be familiar with every season than the average F@TT fan. I personally favor a split, but maybe a small split instead of all 17 campaigns - as suggested earlier, I think you could make a case for splitting it by setting/world:

- Spyre (Fantasy High, Pirates of Leviathan, The Seven)
- The Unsleeping City (seasons 1 and 2)
- Calorum (A Crown of Candy, The Ravening War)
- and maybe a catch-all tag for one-off seasons? This is difficult because there are so many (Bloodkeep, Tiny Heist, Mice & Murder, Misfits & Magic, Fae & Flowers, I could go on…) but most of these are shorter mini-seasons. The only regular-cast full-length seasons that aren’t repeat settings are Neverafter and Starstruck, and tbh I don’t think they’re necessarily popular enough to warrant separate tags.

So, yeah. TLDR single F@TT, maybe split D20 (although that’s super complicated and I’m not exactly opposed to a single tag.)

MDZS tags in the tagset have piped characters (e.g. Wei Ying | Wei Wuxian) which really makes the tagset harder to read.

Hello! We agree that the pipes make it harder to read tags, which is why we don't require pipes as long as it's clear who the character is without them, but it's simply not feasible for us to to remove pipes from all of the piped relationship tags we get — not only because it would be a lot of work, but also because we'd have to query each tag to make sure the pipe was okay to remove. Many, many canonical tags have pipes and even when participants are adding a disambiguation it's usually easiest for them to include the pipes.

You might find it easier to read the tagset if you add some CSS to your site skin that turns each fandom's taglist from a comma separated paragraph into a list with one line per tag. The CSS below will do that and also alphabetize the list.

A quick google tells us that lots of people seem to consider it part of the DCEU, but if you would prefer to nominate it separately we're okay with that too — we've in the past had DCEU subfandoms like Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) nominated separately.

There are 5 new tags in the 2018 version and they're all distinct from the one that was transferred from the 2022 tagset.

Biggles fandom currently has two different disambiguations:

"(Biggles - W. E. Johns)" and "(Biggles)"

Could the mods move these all into one kind of a disambiguation?

Since the other non-book canons aren't nomed, I think all the noms should change to be disambiguated with "(Biggles)" for brevity, since otherwise one of the tags doesn't fit the word limit AO3 sets up.

Having two different disambiguations is fine, as long as it doesn't cause wandering tags and both are clear! Switching them over involves a lot of deleting and re-loading tags, which we like to avoid unless necessary since every time we do that there's a risk that a tag will be lost completely. In this case I don't think the two disambiguations will cause any confusion, so we'll be leaving them as they are :)

I'm afraid my X-Men nominations got a little bit messed up. I tried nominating X-Men (Comicverse), X-Men (Movieverse)(OTM), and X-Men (Movieverse)(ATM), but none of them were accepted when the rest of my nominations were. I wondered if I had the format wrong, so I changed them and X-Men (Alternate Timeline Movies) got accepted, though looking at the instructions I think that one's wrong. However, X-Men (Original Timeline Movies) and X-Men (Comics) haven't been accepted.
I've now resubmitted all of them using the Google Form so that someone who knows what they're doing can figure it out, but I just wanted to let you know and check if there's anything I should do.

Hello! I wanted to let you know about one of the quirks for the MCYT tags, as it looks like SMPearth tags are in but DreamSMP tags have not been crunched through yet. There are multiple mcyt tags that have canonicals that are synned to multiple fandoms, in this case SMPEarth and Dream SMP, though it also shows up with Dream SMP and Origins SMP, and 3rd Life SMP and Hermitcraft SMP. Because of this, a disambiguated tag like "Philza & Technoblade (SMPEarth)" will show up in both SMPEarth and Dream SMP, and beause the backend thinks it's the same tag (it's the same content creators, but different characters), it will override "Philza & Technoblade (Dream SMP)" with the older tag "Philza & Technoblade (SMPEarth)" and the dream smp one tag won't show up in Dream SMP, even though you put them in twice. I do not know if there is a better way to fix this, but when I'm running exchanges I have had to do things like "Philza & Technoblade (SMPEarth and only SMPEarth)" to get a non-canonical tag that won't wander. So right now the only one that this is happening to is Philza & Technoblade (SMPEarth), but it might happen again, sorry.

Thank you for the heads up! I've fixed the "Philza & Technoblade" tag (and a couple other that wandered the opposite direction) so that it's showing up in both fandoms properly and not wandering. I've marked them down to check for wanderers at the end, but if there's any other tags that you suspect aren't showing up due to being overriden by a syn, please let me know!

Two people nominated for this fandom (I was one of them) and formated the name differently... (I don't know if it plays a role but the info in brackets is formated these two different ways even for the nominated characters and ships that are not duplicated).

Hello! I want to nominate the Knight Captain from Neverwinter Nights. The Knight Captain is the character you play in one of the video games and is very customizable - gender, race, class, alignment, etc. Could I nominate a Knight Captain with a specific race or class (e.g., Dwarf Knight Captain or Doomguide Knight Captain), or should I simply nominate the Knight Captain generally?

Original Timeline Movies, and Alternate Timeline Movies! I believe they're in that exact format to prevent tagset fandom syn shenanigans.

(We tend to change tags like that around based on the input of people who are in those fandoms, so if that split ever isn't how you guys want it make sure to bring it up early in nominations so we can put a query up to invite discussion about changing it!)
