It's time for another clarifications post! We've got a medium highlight, the state of things, some medium queries, some fandom/ship clarifications, and your regular disambiguation reminder!
Thank you so much to everyone who has been pointing out duplicates or odd things in the tagset! 🧡 You guys are the best. If I haven't cleaned them up yet, please know that I'm definitely aware of your posts and appreciate them, and will let you know as soon as I've gotten the issue(s) taken care of.
Also thank you to everyone who has been posting about their mediums on the mediums post! Even if we end up doing something different, knowing what you were thinking when you nominated it is a massive help and will absolutely help me today as I go through and get all of the nominated mediums added! 🧡
Medium Highlight: Podfic
- We're starting out a little bit different this time, because I wanted to highlight a medium that can be a little difficult to know how to prompt for!
- If you're requesting podfic, it's important that you think about what you want that podfic to be of. There are currently two podfic medium tags in the tagset:
- Medium Opt-In: Podfic
- Medium Opt-In: Podfic of any of my fics that match this request's fandom/ships
If you choose the latter, you're good! However if you choose the former, please think about what sort of podfic you are wanting. Different types of podfic you might get include:
- Podfic of your fic
- Podfic of a gift that was given to you
- Podfic version of a gift you're getting in this event (either also written by the podficcer or as a collaboration)
- Podfic version of an unrelated fic that matches your request.
- Podfic of other people's works are generally only done with permission, which means that it's important to have permission statements if you're open to having podfic made of your work, even if you aren't requesting it!
- Permission statements usually would go into your bio on AO3. These can be specific, (pointing out specific works you're okay with being transformed) or blanket (saying you're okay with any work being transformed by different mediums)
- Example of a blanket permission statement: "I'm giving blanket permission for podfic, art, and translations. Please use the related works to link back! 🧡"
- You can also check the following sites, which have lists of many people who have given blanket permissions as a resource to creators making transformative works:
State of Things
- At this point the only things that should have been rejected are pairings that were duplicates or that we stated we would reject in an earlier post (which I think is a total of three tags, one crossover and two ATLA)
- If you have any rejections that were not duplicates (if Star Wars/MCU or crossovers, check that we didn't just usher them to the right subfandom), please let me know asap and I will manually add those for you.
- There were three fandoms from the same nominator that AO3 was giving one of us a ton of trouble with on the nom acceptance page, which will appear as rejected. Your pairings were manually added to the tagset. Those three fandoms are as follows:
- Dangan Ronpa - All Media Types
- Higurashi no Naku Koro ni | Higurashi When They Cry
- AI: The Somnium Files (Video Game)
Medium Queries
- Since it has been asked in a few contexts, we wanted to make it very clear that all images must be created by the person posting the work, be part of a collaboration we were informed of, be from the official canon, or properly credited CC licensed images. You may not take outside fanart and include it with your work. You also will not receive wordcount credit for any images you did not create yourself (this includes manips).
- Also as a note, because there has been some concern as the list grows, I plan to clean up the mediums post to group like mediums as well as have a filterable spreadsheet before signups start. Right now it's "new at the bottom" so that people can quickly see what new things have gotten into the tagset since they last checked!
- Reddit Post
- This one is going to need to be more specific! I don't want someone to offer it thinking they would do an In-Universe r/subredditdrama or r/legaladvice post, and then the requestor only wants r/amitheasshole or r/tifu.
- We can also change it to "Any Reddit Text Post" with the understanding that if you request this, your creator will be choosing the subreddit to base it on.
- Conspiracy Board
- I was thinking to do this as a two-option one, but if anyone else has input (or if my wording is confusing) I would appreciate it!
- Boards with detailed parts: The Conspiracy Board itself will count for 1k (to account for arranging it and any text snippets/smaller contained works that aren't enough to count on their own). Any parts that have a determined equivalent (such as articles, drawings, schematics, ect) will count for that work's equivalent as long as they were posted in detail on the work.
- Boards without detailed parts: Will count for 1k
- Original Fan Music or Remix
- Does keeping this together seem to make sense? We will also have another tag that is just the Original Fan Music.
- The current plan for Original Fan Music is to have 20 seconds = 1k, with a minimum suggested quality of either a clean recording or a computer generated demo.
- If that doesn't seem to be a 1:1 when applied to remixes, we'll need to figure out a new equivalent for those.
- In-Universe Social Media
- This is excellent but I'm not sure what the best way to equivalent it would be. Maybe a minimum number of posts/comments? If anyone has any opinions please reply. I know there are generators to make fake posts from different types of social media as well as several sets of instructions that have all the HTML and CSS needed to make these on AO3 directly, so I don't want to include the templates in the wordcount.
- My thinking right now is:
- Written only: 10 posts = 1k, unless total wordcount (post and replies/comments) is over 1k then it counts for wordcount
- Art only: detailed image counts as 1k, a view of the someone's overall page with smaller images follows comics rules of 5 panels = 1k
- Combinations: Art rules + wordcount for detailed art with a large amount of writing. One of the above rules for anything else.
- Essays
I'm planning to change this to "In-Universe Essays" to be more clear. If the nominator was thinking of something else, please let me know!Solved. Nominator of the other tag really did want Any, so this will be changed to In-Universe
- Any Type of Essay
I just want to make sure you really mean any with this, and weren't either thinking the above "In Universe" type.
- Haikus!
- I upped Haikus to a minimum series of 5
- This is still a bit uneven, but feels slightly more balanced when also taking the other poetry types into considerations
- Untitled Goose Style To-Do List
- I was thinking with this to set it at 5 lists, assuming separate lists for separate areas, since some of these can be pretty small.
- Shopping List
- I was thinking with this to set it at 5 lists, or one large formatted/drawn list with additional notes.
- Localization Notes
- Should these be 1k min, or treated more like some of the line based mediums? If line based, what seems fair?
- Translation notes
- Should these be 1k min, or treated more like some of the line based mediums? If line based, what seems fair?
- Tabletop Campaigns
- We were thinking to steal the UFex rules for this one, since it's very complicated, but would also like to hear thoughts if anyone thinks it should go differently:
- one complete short-form hack (honey heist style) = one Fiasco playset = one setting design for a longer D&D campaign = 1k
Nomination Clarifications (Default actions will be taken 4pm EDT 8/16)
- Batman - All Media Types
What version of Batman do you want for this? If this is not renominated in the correct place, we will move these to DC Comics and ask someone familiar with the fandom what's the most likely comics run for these characters for disambiguation purposesIf you move these yourself, please add your disambiguations.Moved
- Fullmetal Alchemist - All Media Types
Do you mean the 2003 anime, or the Brotherhood anime/manga.If not told otherwise we'll assume 2003 since there's already ship overlap with Brotherhood. If you move these yourself please add your disambiguationsMoved
- Les Miserables - All Media Types
Which adaptation of this do you want? There are many many adaptations so if not told, we will be merging this into the Hugo version already in the tagset. If you move these yourself please add your disambiguationsMoved
- Historical RPF
Unfortunately this is way too broad of a category. We already have some more specific historical RPF fandoms, and will need you to split these out. (The fandoms already nominated include "English Civil War RPF" and "15 Century CE RPF"I'm also open to allowing a single "Historical RPF" category with specific disambiguations for the period of history being requested. These will be rejected if they aren't fixed by either renominating to more specific categories with the appropriate disambiguation, or by disambiguating these for the time period applicable to each pairing. If you choose the second option please post here or contact us!If any other Historical RPF shippers have any suggestions for this, or the already accepted Historical RPF subcategories, please let me know!Rejected
- Naruto
The person who nominated "Maito Gai | Might Guy/Sukea (Naruto)", this is already in the tagset as "Hatake Kakashi/Maito Gai | Might Guy (Naruto)". We aren't allowing nominations that would specify a character at a specific point in a single canon (such as a specific disguise, as in this case).Rejected
- Weiß Kreuz
Is "Solo: Fujimiya "Aya" Ran (Weiß Kreuz)" the same thing as "Solo: Fujimiya Aya-chan (Weiß Kreuz)"? One will be removed as a duplicate if we aren't told otherwise.Solved
- Higurashi no Naku Koro ni | Higurashi When They Cry
Is "Mizohu Kasaka" a distinct character or is that "Kousaka Mizuho"?Solved
- DC Comics
We're planning to move the Injustice nominations to "Injustice (All Media Types)" due to that being a story that switches back and forth between videogames and comics. If the nominator would prefer those stay in DC Comics, please respond to let us know.Nominator responded, staying in comics
Disambiguation Reminder
- Please disambiguate all of your nominations with a fandom tag! Disambiguations need to be under one of the following formats!
- Character A/Character B (Fandom)
- Character A & Character B (Fandom)
- Solo: Character A (Fandom)
- Solo: Ambiguous Group (Fandom)
- Solo: Worldbuilding (Fandom)
- Character A (Fandom A) / Character B (Fandom B)
- Character A (Fandom A) & Character B (Fandom B)
- Character A (Fandom A) in Fandom B

Date: 2020-08-15 10:50 pm (UTC)I wanted to give some number-of-lists based equivalence just in case someone went and properly arted/CSSed up a list (though that should maybe be specified)

Date: 2020-08-15 09:41 pm (UTC)Not the nominator, but "Aya" Ran is the brother, Aya-chan is his sister. He uses her name in canon.

Depends on a lot of things like characters can be shorter or longer in length than the actual translation. Can you put a length based on it?
Same with translation from characters to the actual English phrase or using English lettering. Same as above?
Like: キミガシネ | Kimi ga Shine | Your Turn To Die (Visual Novel)
For example: five characters - three Japanese translated from the above words (idk how to say that sorry) - four English words.
(I know it’s a rough one I just used what archive used)
Cool concept! But maybe for a conversation I would say five lines.

Date: 2020-08-16 03:48 am (UTC)I see! Bless both of y'alls hearts if that had to be checked. Thanks for the clarification! In that case I would say length, seems more doable.

Date: 2020-08-16 04:23 am (UTC)One thing that could be neat is translations along with notes. The notes would still need to be what was counted, since that would be the only part I could verify, but that could be where lines would come in instead of word count. Or maybe bullet-points?
No worries about not specifying! I just wasn't certain if that meant the nomination wasn't what I assumed it was and wanted to be sure. :)

Date: 2020-08-16 04:34 am (UTC)Yes! And there's a bullet-point and numbers list on archive to use, and you would be able to spy easily the points being used in the fic! It's a win-win.
S'ok!
