Disambiguation Reminder!

Both of the mods are going to be busy with other things tonight! We also have nominations currently trapped under nominations that need disambiguations added, which are time consuming and make our fingers hurt, so we can't reach any of the other nominations before we get busy!

As such, we thought it was a good time for a post about

Disambiguations

Disambiguations are the green parts of the nominations below.

• Solo: Character A (Fandom)
• Solo: Ambiguous Group (Fandom)
• Solo: Worldbuilding (Fandom)
• Character A (Fandom A) / Character B (Fandom B)

If you have been adding those, please know that you have been one of our favorite participants at some point in time. Our current favorite is the last person we scrolled past who disambiguated, usually. If you have clearly made some attempt at disambiguating, even if you missed a character or used something too broad or something, you have been a favorite for at least a moment.

See above: Mod 2's current favorite participant (the single one with the checkmark, not the bolded ones above it) who is getting approved one nom at a time because that's the very last disambiguated nomination that the interface will show.

 Up until now I have been manually adding disambiguations for people. You really don't want me to have to. I'm going fast, prone to typos, and the mod box is absolutely tiny.

Seriously, see those little boxes? That is where your entire tag is going. There are actually disambiguations in those little boxes, but you can't see them because the box is too small and that's how it ended up after I pasted in the ships. Technically if we press enter, we can see the whole tag. I am not pressing enter. I am in fact scared to press enter, because pressing enter on the mod interface means that sometimes AO3 will go "Oh you wanted to submit the whole thing? Okay!" and when you paste in all the disambiguations before you paste over the actual ships that results in the actual ships being erased and the nominator's page becoming locked. It's bad. I don't do it.

Are there ways to go slower and make absolutely certain that all of the disambiguations are added correctly? Yes. Are there currently 4954 relationships in 517 fandoms? YES.

I'm doing my best to be accurate but with that many relationships--probably at least a quarter of which we have added disambiguations to--there are bound to be errors.

Also you end up with situations like the poor Romeo & Juliet people, who currently have a disambiguation of "R&J - Shakespear". That'll be fixed, because I noticed it and really do want the tagset to be as neat as possible, but if I hadn't noticed they could have been stuck with that typo the whole time!

As we get further into the nomination period, the threat will be less "I might typo your disambiguations" and more "Your nominations are in imminent danger of being rejected." Mod 1 is a softie and will be disambiguating for you until this Friday. We will give 24 hours notice from Saturday to Monday. Starting next Tuesday, it will be necessary to immediately reject incorrectly nominated relationships that are blocking us from seeing and accepting correct ones. (All day changes are at midnight EDT)

So, in summary, please disambiguate! It makes you a mod's temporary favorite, it makes it less likely that accidents could happen to your nominations, and later on in the nominations period you won't be in danger of having your nominations rejected!

This is not a complete list of un-disambiguated fandoms. Please check your nominations even if you weren't mentioned here! The mod interface will only show us so many fandoms at once, so these are the only ones that we can currently see. All the rest of the fandoms, both disambiguated and un-disambiguated, are trapped under these fandoms. This is why we will eventually have to start rejecting incorrect nominations as we get further into the exchange.

I'm not saying this because I expect you to disambiguate for people (people should read and follow your rules!!!) but you can hit comma instead of enter when you're manually entering disambiguations and you won't run into the pressing enter scenario! I hope this is at all helpful to you in any way. Thank you for your hard work!

That's good to know! I don't know if it'll help with how I do them now (I paste in the disambiguations, and then paste the ships in front of that), but I might start automating some of that disambig + ship combo in a spreadsheet so if I do the comma method will work really well. <3
