Nomination clarifications are queries and updates about tags we find confusing. The goal of nominations is to create a tagset of unambiguous, easy to understand tags that will be useful to participants and solidly within the scope of the exchange. Things work a little differently depending on how you've nominated.

Google form nominations: These all go straight into a fancy spreadsheet! It's easy for us to see all nominations that come in, but none of you can see your nominations after you submit, so we'll be posting both queries for tags we need more information on and updates on what tags we had to reject and why.

The only time limit on responding to queries for nominations submitted this way is close of nominations.

AO3 nominations: These are delivered to us via AO3's horrible tagset backend. It's impossible to see new nominations without clearing our the ones on top of the queue. We also have no record of tags we reject without keeping our own cumbersome list, and it's harder to change tags nominated incorrectly.

We will reject incorrectly formatted AO3 nominations without comment, and tags we have to query will have some kind of time limit on responses (probably 24-48 hours) because lingering nominations keep us from accepting tags farther down in the queue. If we reject a tag for a reason other than being incorrectly formatted, we will do our best to mention it here.

How to look for and respond to clarification posts: Tags are separated by query vs rejection notice, form vs AO3 nomination, and then by fandom. You can respond anonymously to this post or logged in. If you are not the nominator but have relevant fandom knowledge about something, please speak up! If you have questions about nominations not covered in this post, please ask!

Queries

Google Forms nominations

• Black Widow: All tags — Is this Black Widow (Comics, Marvel 616), Black Widow (Movie 2021), or a different Marvel Black Widow canon?
• Fruits Basket: All tags — "Fruits Basket" is technically an All Media Types tag on AO3 because there's a manga and two animes. We prefer fandoms be as specific as possible both to avoid confusion, matching problems, and pinch hitting problems. Which version of Fruits Basket are you most familiar with/do you most want gifts based on? (Please let us know if you are the gform nominator or the AO3 nominator when you comment!)
• Returnal (Video Game): Selene Vassos & Selene Vassos (Returnal) — This is the same character twice! Are there canonically two different versions of this character?
• Sherlock Holmes - Arthur Conan Doyle: WB: Victorian England (Sherlock Holmes - ACD) — "Victorian England" is very broad. If the nominator is really just very into literally any Victorian history facts then we'll approve it, but we wanted to make sure that the nominator wouldn't prefer something more specific or directly related to Sherlock Holmes?
• Star Trek: Alternate Original Series (Movies): WB: First Contact (ST AOS) — Does this tag refer to humans' first contact with aliens, or to the crew of the Enterprise being the first contact for some other species?
• Transformers (Bay Movies): WB: Transformers Exist (Transformers Bay) — This is definitely broad enough, but we're not really sure what you mean -- do you mean you want worldbuilding about the impact of transformers on human society?
• 全职高手 - 蝴蝶蓝 | Quánzhí Gāoshǒu - Húdié Lán: WB: Silver Equipment Development (Quánzhí Gāoshǒu) — "WB: Silver Equipment" is also nominated. We would like to hear from both nominators (assuming there's more than one of you) about what they want from their tag and if it's similar enough to use one of these tags for both and, if so, which one.
• 全职高手 - 蝴蝶蓝 | Quánzhí Gāoshǒu - Húdié Lán: WB: Silver Equipment (Quánzhí Gāoshǒu) — "WB: Silver Equipment Development" is also nominated. We would like to hear from both nominators (assuming there's more than one of you) about what they want from their tag and if it's similar enough to use one of these tags for both and, if so, which one.

• Pacific Rim (Movies): WB: Jaegers Exist (Sentient or Otherwise) (Pacific Rim) — We're not sure what this tag means but it seems to be asking for an AU version of the Pacific Rim movies, which is unfortunately beyond our scope. (...But we do definitely realize you were one of our nominations testers and had subpar WB: tag instruction, so we're very sorry!)
• Star Trek: Alternate Original Series (Movies): WB: Sentient USS Enterprise (ST AOS) — It's our understanding that the Enterprise isn't canonically sentient in this version of Star Trek, so unfortunately we cannot accept this tag. (...But we do definitely realize you were one of our nominations testers and had subpar WB: tag instruction, so we're very sorry!)

Hello! I am one of the QZGS nominators. :) I am fine with either version of the tag; "Silver Equipment Development" is more specific, but it also aims straight at the bit I'm most interested in. (...despite now I'm pretty sure I recall only nominating the "Silver Equipment" version...)

I’m the other nominator. To be quite honest I actually didn’t remember which one I had nominated. (So I guess it was silver equipment development)

I agree with Shade on the tags. I’m personally more interested in the development of the weapons, their designs, and such — which I think is why I nominated that tag.

To the fiab mods, I’m good with either tag being used (and believe having both in the same tagset would be redundant)

No problem! The first and last look good, but we would like to approve the Star Trek one as "WB: Starfleet First Contact Protocol" or "WB: Enterprise First Contact Protocol" if that catches your meaning well enough? I realize it might not directly gesture at any alien worldbuilding, but we want to make sure WB tags don't slip into prompt territory and point pretty firmly at which subject exactly should be worldbuilt about, if that makes sense!

Returnal (Video Game)

Hey, I'm the nominator for the Returnal tag, and yes, there can be two Selenes. In the game she is stuck in a time-loop but she sees her old bodies, and there are voicelogs indicating she interacts with her other selves when they are alive, so it can be seen as her being cloned or some handwave-y sci-fi element that she can interact with herself, and those selves can be totally different in characterization. Some self of hers are modded with alien tech or start to lose their mind. So there is some distinction here, I didn't know how else to nominate. :) Either Selene & Alternate!Selene if that's okay for you, or just the solo tag?

As long as there are canonically alternate Selenes, it's definitely allowed! I just wanted to check because my quick google wasn't giving me solid answers. How does "Selene Vassos & Any Alternate Version of Selene Vassos (Returnal)" sound?

Also I see you want to avoid "A & B/C" tags. Sorry I didn't see that earlier and nominated "Creator’s Choice of Presenters(s) (GBBO) & Arthur/Eames (Inception)."

I don't mean to make the presenters part of the relationship, I just couldn't think of any other way to request a GBBO/Inception crossover where I want Arthur/Eames, the rest of the inception ensemble (in a gen way), and the GBBO judges and presenters (in a gen way).

RE: the OW nominations, if you nominated on AO3 can you link your sign up so that we can be sure you're the nominator? If you nominated via google form, we'll just add the tags you want in addition to the tags you've already added.

RE: crossover fandom, don't worry! We are fine with mixed nominations, we are just trying to make sure the / relationship comes before any &. We'll swap that tag out with Arthur/Eames (Inception) & Creator’s Choice of Presenters(s) (GBBO)
