Nominating Mediums
Nomination is how you add things to the tagset! Mediums aren't matchable via AO3, but participants can opt into mediums other than fanfiction. If you're someone who wishes to match on one of those mediums as a creator you'll be able to email us (ficinaboxmod@gmail.com) or contact us here on DW via the screened mod contact post
This post is where you should nominate any mediums you want added to the tagset!
If you're nominating a new length opt-in, another form of something already in the tagset, or something that fits easily into the Rulesets, anyone can nominate.
If nominating a medium where the equivalent needs to be discussed you should only nominate if you are someone who intends to create the medium within the exchange.
You may also nominate a medium with Unique Rules instead of a ruleset. In the interest of avoiding rules creep, new Unique Rules mediums should only be mediums that absolutely cannot fit into a ruleset and which have multiple people interested in creating them, or which can either be added to an existing set of Unique Rules or added as a variation to that section

When nominating a medium, please include the following categories:

Date: 2025-08-03 08:30 pm (UTC)Ruleset(s): Art
What is it: Poster of a stage performance that happens within canon/the canon universe
Other Info:
Medium: Medium Opt-In: Illustrated Text (Art & Writing) - In-Universe Stage Performance Playbill Page
Ruleset(s): Writing and Art
What is it: Page(s) from a playbill for a stage performance that happens within canon/the canon universe
Other Info:
Medium: Medium Opt-In: Writing - In-Universe Transcript of Sports Match Commentary
Ruleset(s): Writing
What is it: Transcript of monologue or dialogue of sports commentator(s) narrating (parts of) a sports match on radio or TV
Other Info:
no subject
Date: 2025-08-03 08:58 pm (UTC)Ruleset(s): Medium Opt-In: Unique Rules - Web Weave, collage-style subsection
What is it: Specifically the collage style of web weave, as opposed to the photo set style
no subject
Date: 2025-08-03 09:02 pm (UTC)Ruleset(s): Writing
What is it: A curated list of fic recommendations
Other Info: I could see this being a word count thing (1000 words of recs = 1000 words towards total) or something like 10 recs = 1000 words. Regardless I would love to request some fic rec lists for big fandoms lol
Medium: Pressed Botanicals
Date: 2025-08-03 09:43 pm (UTC)Ruleset(s): Art
What is it: Mixed media art out of dried/pressed plants or flowers, possibly with hand-drawn elements
Other Info:
Medium examples:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/60962314 (with hand-drawn elements)
https://64.media.tumblr.com/78cd09c2b9249927e61f86e6dcac6700/tumblr_oq9zbdSMkh1u4hn98o1_1280.jpg (with hand-painted and yarn elements)
Regarding the Ruleset and category: I picked Art, since 1) despite the unconventional material, the resulting gift is still a 2D image so Art is where people would expect it, 2) Papercraft exists as an Art subformat and this is kind of similar. But something like Craftworks would also be possible (and IMO the 2k equivalent is a bit more fitting here).

Date: 2025-08-03 10:33 pm (UTC)Ruleset(s): Art
What is it: Cutting layers or pieces of paper, then adhering them together to create a cohesive artwork
Other Info: This was mentioned in the rules but not nominated as a tag, so I'm nominating it!
no subject
Date: 2025-08-03 11:16 pm (UTC)Ruleset(s): Typographic Design
What is it: Rendering letterforms by hand with varying degrees of aesthetic stylizing & conventions.
Other Info: The art ruleset also has the 1K equivalent for one page/image if that fits better.
Medium: Medium Opt-In: Art - In-Universe Handwriting
Ruleset: Art
What is it: writing, but by hand! Specifically hand-written rather than typed in-universe written materials.
Other Info: I'm kind of stumped by the categorization and even the basic inclusion of this one because it could be applied to so many existing In-Universe opt-in mediums in the tagset (Epistolary, Field Report, Diary Entry, etc.). With a transcript included for wordcount, it's as accessible as any Writing opt-in, but it's fundamentally more time-consuming to create because the text has to be both drafted *and* written out in a physical medium. I hesitantly feel that the 1K-for-full-page equivalency for Art opt-ins works for this, because that accounts for the base wordcount of the created text (depending on size of writing, probably around 100-300 words on an A4 page) as well as an additional medium/artistry aspect of it. I would also happily take a 500-750 wordcount equivalent per page as well but then my understanding is that it would then have to be in a unique ruleset. I would love to hear from anyone else who might also be interested in creating handwritten materials on their thoughts on equivalency or if it needs to be a medium opt-in at all?
thank you!

Date: 2025-08-03 11:52 pm (UTC)Ruleset(s): Writing
What is it: An astrological birth chart that lists out where the planets and houses were at the time of a character or event's birth or happening, and a written explanation of what those mean astrologically.
Other Info: I believe this could also have a version under Illustrated Text, if somebody wanted to illustrate the natal chart and its aspects.

Date: 2025-08-04 12:47 am (UTC)Ruleset: Poetry
What is it: A five-line poem with a specific syllable count- the first and last line are both 2 syllables, the second line is 4 syllables, the third line is 6 syllables, the fourth line is 8 syllables. The lines don’t have to rhyme
Other Info: Based on other poetry rules I think 3 poems would equal 1K (15 lines)

Date: 2025-08-04 05:45 am (UTC)Ruleset(s): Unique
What is it: A drawn layout of a requested character and their matching outfits that can be printed out and cut out to be fitted onto the character.
Equivalents: 500 for any complete characters (including creatures, animals, and robots) and 250 for any outfit.
Example: A 1k work equivalent would be something like a doll of "Alice"(500) with two outfits that can be fitted onto her (250 each).
Other Info: The equivalents are borrowed from Dress-up games and sticker pages in the ruleset.

Date: 2025-08-04 06:00 am (UTC)Ruleset(s): Illustrated Text (Art & Writing)
What is it: A fic with art
Other Info: Essentially your very basic "fanfic with accompanying art/illustration" (which I thought was already a medium opt-in, but apparently not?)
Medium: Medieval Illumination-Style Art
Ruleset(s): Art
What is it: Art in the style of a medieval illumination
Other Info: I thought about factoring text/calligraphy into it, but figured that might make the scoring too complicated. My thought is just to keep any text optional and score it like other forms of art in the ruleset.
Medium: Medieval Illumination-Style Illustration of a Scene From the Recipient's Fic
Ruleset(s): Art
What is it: Illustration from a scene from the recipient's fanfic in the style of a medieval illumination
Other Info: (like above) I thought about factoring text/calligraphy into it, but figured that might make the scoring too complicated.

Date: 2025-08-04 07:26 am (UTC)Ruleset(s): Instructions
What is it: Cocktail recipes without alcohol
Other info: Similarly named tag for cocktail recipes already exists in the tagset, same rules would apply

Date: 2025-08-04 10:35 am (UTC)Ruleset(s): Length
What is it: Drabble sequence comprised of drabbles of any sort
Other Info:
Medium: Drabble Sequence, Single
Ruleset(s): Length
What is it: Drabble sequence comprised of single drabbles (exactly 100 words)
Other Info:
Medium: Drabble Sequence, Double
Ruleset(s): Length
What is it: Drabble sequence comprised of double drabbles (exactly 200 words)
Other Info:
Medium: Drabble Sequence, Triple
Ruleset(s): Length
What is it: Drabble sequence comprised of triple drabbles (exactly 300 words)
Other Info:
Medium: 900 words exactly
Ruleset(s): Length
What is it: Fic that is exactly 900 words long
Other Info:

Date: 2025-08-04 01:16 pm (UTC)Ruleset(s): Unique Rules
What is it: A personal website designed from scratch. Screenshots of the website and all its pages should be hosted on an AO3 work. An interactive version of the website should be hosted on an external platform like Neocities, Strawpage, or any other web host.
Other Info: Web design! This is a medium that would allow for a lot of creativity. Think of having period-appropriate personal websites: a character's personal Geocities site circa 2002; an in-universe fansite for a character or hobby. Given a custom workskin/custom template used for the first time adds 1k to a work's count, I believe 1k per separate HTML + CSS template used on the website should suffice, but I'm not 100% certain and I'm happy to work with you all on determining an appropriate equivalent count.

Date: 2025-08-04 02:52 pm (UTC)Ruleset(s): Unique Rules
What is it: There's a category for sofies and pottery, this would be an open medium where the creator could make any type of craft or a mixed media craft to meet the request. Like weaving a physical tapestry or sewing an a piece of clothing a character has.
Other Info: The standard one item = 1000 words would fit. It would also allow the people creating cross stitch or knitting patterns to add another 1000 words to their count by physically making the object they've created the pattern for.

Date: 2025-08-04 04:16 pm (UTC)Ruleset(s): Art
What is it: Art of a character’s possessions, belongings, “what’s in my bag”, “everyday carry”; their inventory!
Other Info: May or may not include knolling, at artist’s discretion.
no subject
Date: 2025-08-05 01:04 am (UTC)Ruleset(s): Audio & Writing
What is it: A fanmix with liner notes explaining the connection between each song and the character/ship/canon/etc. This can be done as lengthy or as short as the creator desires, and can be done both in a meta sense or by writing a drabble pulling from the song to illustrate the connection.
Other Info: The equivalent would be much like in illustrated writing except with the audio ruleset; so for example 5 tracks that have 500 words of liner notes would equal to 1k.

Date: 2025-08-05 09:16 am (UTC)no subject
Date: 2025-08-06 01:33 am (UTC)Ruleset(s): Unique Rules
What is it: A picture logic puzzle in which cells in a grid must be colored or left blank according to numbers at the edges of the grid to reveal a hidden picture.
Other Info:
no subject
Date: 2025-08-06 02:59 pm (UTC)no subject
Date: 2025-08-06 03:19 pm (UTC)no subject
Date: 2025-08-06 06:00 pm (UTC)Ruleset(s): Audio
What is it: A chatty-style podfic, including interjections from the podficcer and potentially leaving in mistakes and stumbles. Sometimes called A Cold Read (definition 2), but that term would be ambiguous so I'd suggest avoiding it. Here is an example.
Other Info: Would most likely use the audio length measure.
Medium: Audio Meta Commentary & Recorded Meta
Ruleset(s): Audio
What is it: A podcast episode (examples about fic recs, about a fandom), a recorded reading of a written meta (definition, example), or a podfic freetalk defintion, example).
Other Info: Probably going by audio length, or script wordcount. The & in the medium title bothers me, but I couldn't find a way to split the two without having the overlap of a scripted podcast = a recording of a meta you wrote yourself. Freetalks are usually about a specific podfic, so they could be removed here and added to the previous nomination if that would make more sense, or be a separate tag.
Medium: Fannish Zine
Ruleset(s): Typographic Design
What is it: One or more pages from a fanzine. Similar to in-universe magazines, but not in-universe. Just like with traditional zine, there is no expectation of a professional look or quality. Could be a cover page, a spread, or a 1-page foldable mini zine. Here are a few examples: a mini zine, a first full zine, a second one.
Other Info: same minimums/etc as for in-universe magazines, spreads and covers. Can be split into those four if necessary, as long as all of them were requestable/offerable I'd be happy.
Medium: Fannish Board & Party Game
Ruleset(s): Illustrated Text (Art & Writing)
What is it: A playable board or party game that incorporates elements from at least one fandom.
Examples:
- A remix of an existing game with a fandom twist, for example, a snakes and ladders board where the ladders and snakes have been replaced with ghosts and stone staircases for a Hades (Video Game 2018) version.
- A game inspired by an existing game like this podfic twister. The game linked is not fandom-specific, but for this exchange, any gift would of course have to respect the rules about requested fandoms and tags.
- A new party game about a fandom, for example, a set of cards with characters and tropes that each player would draw from one by one and have to incorporate into the round-robin style story they're building.
Other Info: Game rules can count as text, and any graphic element can count as art! Minimum could be really basic rules (could be "same rule as [insert existing game here]") and like, one very simple board. I really hesitated with the ruleset, because depending on how it's done, it could also be Writing, or Typographic Design. The example linked above would only count as Writing, iiuc. Should there be different opt-ins, one for each?
Medium: In-Universe Board & Party Game
Ruleset(s): Illustrated Text (Art & Writing)
What is it: A playable board or party game that could exist in-universe.
Examples:
- To pass the time when assigned in the human world, a group of shinigami (fandom: Bleach) have created a game to find the most horrible human food possible. The gift could contain the set of rules they drew up, potentially the current attempts and their scores, and maybe some illustrations of the dishes.
- What would be the rules for Shogi in Inazuma (fandom: Genshin Impact)?
- A Gotham Monopoly board.
Other Info: Same notes as the one above.
Medium: Playing Card
Ruleset(s): Art
What is it: A card from a playable game, for example a queen of ace featuring with someone's blorbo, or a uno reverse card illustrated with two halves of a rival pairing.
Other Info: This is very close to Art - Tradeable Cards, and could just fall into fanart, too.
Medium: Oral Notfic
Ruleset(s): Audio
What is it: An oral not!fic is a type of podfic not based on existing text, such as a fic. It is often improvisational or conversational in tone. Here is an example.
Other Info: Would be measured by length.
Medium: Notfic
Ruleset(s): Writing
What is it: A story that is not fully fleshed out, usually in a more casual tone. Can also be called a story outline or summary. Definition with examples.
Other Info: Same measurements as traditional fic.
Medium: In-Universe AO3 Based Fannish Event & Related Posts/Messages
Ruleset(s): Unique Rules
What is it: Variation on In-Universe AO3 Based Fanfic Exchange & Related Posts/Messages, but not restricted to fanfic or exchanges. Could be for art, vids, podfic, ... could be a prompt fest, a big bang, ...
Other Info: Same rules as In-Universe AO3 Based Fanfic Exchange & Related Posts/Messages.
Medium: In-Universe Event & Related Posts/Messages
Ruleset(s): Unique Rules
What is it: Variation on In-Universe AO3 Based Fanfic Exchange & Related Posts/Messages, but for real life events. For example, an in-universe fan-convention, a fake concert, an in-universe TED talk, ...
Other Info: Same rules as In-Universe AO3 Based Fanfic Exchange & Related Posts/Messages. Might be too similar to In-Universe Social Media?
Medium: Fannish Headcanon
Ruleset(s): Writing
What is it: Variation on Worldbuilding Headcanon, but not restricted to worldbuilding.
Other Info: Same rules as Worldbuilding Headcanon. Close to the proposed Notfic, though Notfic is more story-oriented whereas Headcanons don't require a coherent narrative with a start and an end.
Medium: Graphic Charter Document
Ruleset(s): Typographic Design
What is it: a document explaining the graphic charter for an organization, event or person, most likely containing color charts, fonts, visual communication elements and/or guidelines, whether for print, social media, or other channels. Could be in-universe , or simply fannish.
Examples:
- In a Naruto modern AU, an internal Konoha administration document explaining how emails should be formatted and what email signatures are acceptable,
- A proposal for the visuals of a fake Huntr/x album, including color palette, logo, and various graphic elements,
- A social media kit for SVSSS fans, including profile icons and banners in various sizes.
Other Info: Can't just go in the Art ruleset because it will most likely be composed of vectorial drawings and/or sourced images. I'm hoping that the document aspect (which would use visual hierarchy and page layout techniques to arrange text and images pleasingly) is enough to include it in the exchange.
Crosswords
Date: 2025-08-06 08:09 pm (UTC)Ruleset(s): Unique Ruleset
What is it: Fandom(/character)-themed crossword puzzle!
Other Info:
Extremely up for negotiation when it comes to rules but I'm thinking maybe,
Minimum: 15 words + accompanying clues
Word count equivalent: each word+clue combo = 100 words, so a 15 word crossword would equal 1500 words.
Medium Nomination
Date: 2025-08-06 08:34 pm (UTC)Ruleset(s): Audio
What is it: Recorded audio of a character narrating about their feelings or about an event happening in-universe
Other Info:
Example: https://m.soundcloud.com/savagenami/pandemonica-does-your-taxes
Another example: https://youtu.be/zVoOSgUb_U4?si=mAeGPuT7ZaDs-DwU
Dating Site Profile
Date: 2025-08-07 04:52 am (UTC)Ruleset(s): Illustrated Text (Art & Writing)
What is it: For one character, a dating app/dating website profile with at least one illustration of the character, & written profile sections filled out with answers to questions typical of dating apps/sites.
Other Info: I could see this either being heavy on pictures or heavy on text and scaling up in WC equivalent for either medium.

Medium Opt-In: Illustrated Text (Art & Writing) - In-Universe Stage Performance Playbill Page
