Nominations Clarification 1

Important update to the nominations process! We will be rejecting a lot more AO3-nominated tags this year because we have a lot more people helping us with nominations. The good part of more helpers is that we're getting through tags a lot faster. The bad part of more helpers is that it's a lot harder to coordinate information. To prevent us from accidentally accepting queried tags, we will be rejecting all queried tags.

AO3 nominators will not lose nomination slots to tags rejected for queries — once we've settled the query, we'll put in whatever tag(s) we've agreed on via batch load for you. Generally, we will enter replacement tags for anything rejected or queried for complicated reasons (examples: WB tags we don't understand; characters we thought might be inanimate objects but aren't) but won't enter replacement tags for simple rule breaking (examples: tags with more than 6 characters; tags nominated in lapslock; WB: [Character] Backstory) which is how it's basically always been anyway.

Here is a little FAQ about Nominations Clarification posts for those of you who haven't run into them before:

What/why is a Nominations Clarification post?

Nomination clarifications are queries about tags we find confusing and updates about tags or the tagset in general. The goal of nominations is to create a tagset of unambiguous, easy to understand tags that will be useful to participants and solidly within the scope of the exchange. The goal of a clarifications post is to keep all of our participants up-to-date regarding our nominations work and solicit feedback where necessary to create the most useful tagset we can.

Do I need to read the whole post?

No. You can just skim each clarification post to see if a fandom you're interested in requesting or offering has been mentioned. We recommend doing this even if you don't care very much how the tagset is organized in case we make some kind of huge blunder with your favorite fandom or OTP.

How do I reply to a Nominations Clarification post? Do I need a Dreamwidth account?

You don't need a Dreamwidth account because we have anonymous commenting turned on. If you comment anonymously, remember to check back for our reply! You can also email us at ficinaboxmod@gmail.com if you'd prefer.

There's a query about a fandom I'm familiar with, but I'm not the nominator. Can I tell you what I think?

Yes! If you are not the nominator but have relevant fandom knowledge about something, please speak up. Nominators don't always reply to our queries, so answers from other people in the fandom are often very helpful.

NEW! Why haven't you processed my nomination(s) yet?

Nominations can't be processed in a strictly first-in, first-out manner because of various backend reasons, so most likely we just haven't yet had a chance because of the large volume of submitted nominations. Double check our nominations clarification posts for your tag. If sign ups open and one or more of your tags is mysteriously still missing, please reach out.

NEW! My AO3 tagset nomination(s) were rejected but aren't discussed below, why did you reject them?

Most likely you failed to disambiguate your nominations, or made some other error — we reject incorrect tags rather than fixing them. You're welcome to post a link to your nominations slate if you'd like us to tell you why the tag(s) were rejected. You can attempt to re-nominated tags either on AO3 or via the form if you'd like.

However, there is a delay between us rejecting and us posting nominations clarifications! Literally as I post this post, other people on the tagmod team are approving/rejecting new tags. So your rejected tag might show up in a future clarification post

Medium Removals.

• Medium Opt-In: Writing - Rashomon (1950)-style Conflicting Narratives
• Medium Opt-In: Writing - Non-Linear Narrative

This year we're removing these two legacy tags from the medium list, as we'd like to avoid fic narrative or style tags that would be reasonable for someone to receive without opting in. If you would like to get these styles of fic, please mention it in your optional details!

Recursive fandoms looking for interested requesters/offerers

Per exchange rules, new recursive fandoms need at least three people to be interested in them before we can approve them into the tagset. This is to make sure we don't end up overrun by recursive fandoms that no one can create for.

What am I agreeing to by saying I'm interested? Do I need to request/offer the fandom? It's not a binding blood oath or anything, and we won't check if you follow through. We are just trying to confirm that there's a minimum amount of interest in the recursive fandom in FIAB's audience.

• Critical Role (Web Series): Caleb Widogast & Volstrucker (Critical Role) — Is this Any Volstrucker or the unnamed Volstrucker from C2E70?
• Dracula - Bram Stoker (Novel 1897): Solo: The Crew of Light (Dracula - BS) — This seems to be a fanon nickname for a group of characters. Is there a canonical term that we could use? If not, is "The Crew of Light" sufficiently unambiguous that requesters/offerers know what it means and could be sure to roughly agree on which characters are meant?
• Dune (Movies - Villeneuve): Paul Atreides/Irulan Corrino/Chani/Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen (Dune Movies) — This has been approved into the tagset, we just wanted to let the nominator know that we edited the tag because although "Chani Kynes" is the canonical AO3 tag, in the movies specificly she's just "Chani". Thank you for trying to provide a full name, though!
• Hello Kitty - All Media Types: All tags — We really prefer not to accept All Media Type tags. Nominator, can you pick a more specific fandom? It doesn't need to be canonical on the archive. If you can't/don't want to, please instead let is know why you need an AMT tag.
• Hermitcraft SMP: WB: the Moon (Hermitcraft) — Does this refer to season 8's season-ending apocolypse, or does the nominator really want any worldbuilding about the moon in any season of Hermitcraft? If you meant the Season 8 Moonpocalypse, we could switch this to "WB: Moon-Approach Apocolypse (Hermitcraft)" or "WB: Moon's Big (Hermitcraft)"
• Hermitcraft SMP: WB: Water's Infected (Hermitcraft) — Water's Infected is a popular fanon this season. Hermits have repeatedly interacted with rivers/oceans/lakes in lore, and this draws a reason between it all. However, it is not a theory put forth in-canon by any of the creators as far as I know. We would like to change this to something that more explicitly reflects canon like WB: The Water on Hermitcraft Season 10 (Hermicraft) — the water infection fanon can be a prompt in Optional Details.
• The Magnus Archives (Podcast): Solo: Any Entity (TMA) — We can't tell if Entities are ever/always sentient — it seems like they might be more of a cosmic force. Could TMA requesters/offerers let us know: are the entities treated like characters, or like forces of nature/powers? Do they talk, or do other characters talk to them? Or would this tag be better as a WB: tag?

Ao3 tagset nominations

• Devil May Cry (Gameverse): WB: Devil Arm Weapons Schematics (DMC) — It seems like these are canonically created by a demon being defeated and transforming into the weapon, so these aren't something there would be canonical schematics. We are willing to accept "WB: Devil Arm Weapons (DMC)" or "WB: Devil Arms (DMC)" (whichever you feel is clearer) or a different WB tag altogether.
• Gravity Falls: Bill Cipher & Euclid (Gravity Falls), Bill Cipher & Scalene (Gravity Falls) — We rejected these because we couldn't find them on the wiki, but then we figured out where they come from, so they're in the tagset now!
• Gravity Falls: WB: Bill Cipher's Meddling on Human History (Gravity Falls) — Is it canon that Bill Cipher has inluenced human history in some notable way? But also, it seems like the only character this WB tag could apply to would be Bill Cipher himself, so even if it's canon this might be better as a prompt under Solo: Bill Cipher.
• Hermicraft SMP: WB: the Moon (Hermitcraft) — Does this refer to season 8's season-ending apocolypse, or does the nominator really want any worldbuilding about the moon in any season of Hermitcraft? • League of Legends: WB: Heartsteel — A) this was mistakenly accepted without a disambiguation and has now been removed and B) Do you mean the Heartsteel item or the Heartsteel band or Heartsteel the fraction? I'll put in a replacement tag since we needed to query it anyway.
• League of Legends: WB: Musicverse Heartsteel & KDA & True Damage & Pentakill (League of Legends) — I'm prettty sure we can't accept this, but we're also really confused about what it means. Nominator, are you trying to request worldbuilding that's about the canonical Musicverse and focused on the bands named in this nomination? If so, you would probably be better served by a tag like "Solo: Creator's Choice of Canon Musicverse Band (League of Legends)"! But If you want worldbuilding about the music industry, we could switch this to something like "WB: Music Industry In The Musicverse (League of Legends)"
• Stranger Things (TV 2016): Will Byers/Henry Creel (Stranger Things), Will Byers/Vecna (Stranger Things) — We are under the impression that Vecna and Henry Creel are different names for the same entity. We don't allow characters to be nominated under aliases, assumed names, etc. Could people familiar with the fandom let us know if these characters are indeed the same? If they're different, how are they different?
• Street Fighter: All tags — This tag functions as an All Media Types tag (See the fandoms under it here) which we try to avoid. It's already in the tagset. Are the nominator(s) sure that this is the best fandom, or should we move to something more specific? For example, "Street Fighter (Video Games)" which would exclude the cartoons and movies.
• 幽☆遊☆白書 | YuYu Hakusho: Ghost Files (Anime & Manga): Hiei & Kurama | Minamino Shuuichi & Kuwabara Kazuma & Urameshi Yuusuke (YYH) — (Also applies to other tags with "Yuusuke" spelling) Sorry nominator, you did these noms perfectly, we just got a little confused about spelling. They're in the tagset now!

• Hermitcraft SMP: WB: Etho 404 (Hermitcraft) — It's our understanding that this is a reference to a 4th-wall breaking episode in Etho's single player lets play series, rather than something that happened in Hermitcraft. Also, this is a worldbuilding tag that it seems could only be about Etho, which might make it a WB tag we couldn't accept even nominated under the right fandom.
• Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Julian Bashir/Elim Garak/Kelas Parmak (DS9) — We can't accept this under Star Trek: Deep Space Nine because Kelas Parmak doesn't appear in that show; he only shows up in various novels. We would like to accept under "Star Trek - Various Authors" — is that alright?

Ao3 tagset nominations

• Devil May Cry (Gameverse): WB: Order of the Sword (DMC) — This is a group, which isn't allowed as a WB: nom. You can either re-nominate as "Solo: Order of the Sword (DMC)" or provide a replacement WB tag that specifies what kind of worldbuilding you'd like about this group. For example, you might want to know about their recruitment, history, laws/rules, or so on.
• Dream SMP: WB: How Do Canon Lives Work (Dream SMP) — This was already accepted by mistake, but has been removed because we don't allow WB: tags in the form of questions/prompts. "Canon Lives" also doesn't sound like in-universe terminology (although with MCYT I know it might be). We are willing to replace this with a rephrased tag, although I don't know enough about the canon to suggest a rephrasing. You can tell us more about what you're hoping for out of the tags if you need help coming up with a new tag.
• Hermitcraft SMP: WB: The Mycelium Resistance (Hermitcraft) — This is a group, which isn't allowed. You can either provide a more specific WB tag about the group (say, about the tactics the resistance uses, their base of operations, or any other canonical aspect) or you can suggest a placement tag that's covers the actual conflict between the Mycelium Resistance and whoever/whatever they were resisting.
• HIStory3 - 圈套 | HIStory3: Trapped (TV): Meng Shaofei/Tang Yi & Jack/Zhao-zi (HIStory3: Trapped TV) — This tag has been removed from the tagset because it was accepted in error; the format A/B & C/D is not accepted in this exchange. You can only have one / ship (with up to 6 characters) per relationship field tag.
• League of Legends: WB: Du Couteau Childhood (League of Legends) — We don't allow character backstory as WB: tags; you can ask for character backstory by requseting the relevant character(s) and prompting for backstory in your optional details.
• minecraft youtube RPF: All tags — We've replaced this with Minecraft YouTuber RPF because (through no fault of the nominator) this tag is permanently lapslock and we just can't live with that.
• Naruto (Anime & Manga): Nara Shikako & Uchiha Sasuke & Uzumaki Naruto (Dreaming of Sunshine) — This tag came in under Naruto becasue you either nominated it under the Naruto (Anime & Manga) fandom or because you nominated it under a fandom tag synned to that tag. Dreaming of Sunshine needs to be nominated under Dreaming of Sunshine - SilverQueen (DFE) to prevent this issue. You nominations slate might be broken now; if so, please make any further nominations via the google form.
• Philza Hardcore Season 4: All tags — The tag "Philza Hardcore Season 4" has been synned to Dream SMP by Ao3 tag wranglers, so all these tags accidentally ended up under Dream SMP. We rejected them and then put them into the tagset under the fandom "Philza Hardcore S4 Lore" which is not synned to Dream SMP.
• Rick and Morty: WB: Physics and Backstory of the Cob Planet (Rick and Morty) — We actually accepted this as "WB: Physics and History of the Cob Planet (Rick and Morty)" because "backstory" is usually for characters rather than planets. If for some reason this causes problems, please let us know.
• S.C.I.谜案集 | S.C.I. Mystery (TV): Bai Yutong/Zhan Yao & Bai Chi/Zhao Zhen (S.C.I. Mystery TV) — This tag has been removed from the tagset because it was accepted in error; the format A/B & C/D is not accepted in this exchange. You can only have one / ship (with up to 6 characters) per relationship field tag.
• Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Kira Nerys/Ro Laren (DS9) — This tag was already in the tagset but has been removed because it should be in Crossover Fandom as Ro Laren never appears in DS9. Kira Nerys (ST: DS9)/Ro Laren (ST: TNG) (or possibly ST: Picard for Ro Laren, as she also appears there, but TNG is the main one.) Please renominate under the correct fandom.
• Star Trek: The Next Generation: Beverly Crusher (ST: the next generation)/Kathryn Janeway (ST: Voyager) — Janeway doesn't seem to appear in TNG; please re-nominate under Crossover Fandom. "
• Stranger Things (TV 2016): Eleven | Jane Hopper/Maxine ""Max"" Mayfield (Stranger Things), Will Byers/Lucas Sinclair (Stranger Things) — Sorry, these tags are actually in! There were duplicates in the tagset already (using a different disambiguation) and we fumbled how we handled them a little by rejecting instead of accepting them as the alternately disambiguated tags."
• The Endless (2017): Aaron/Justin (The Endless) — We mistakenly accepted this but it's been removed from the tagset because it doesn't use the characters' full names. Please renominate with full names included.
• The Penumbra Podcast: WB: Past Heists (The Penumbra Podcast) — This reads like a prompt for character backstory to us, which isn't allowed. We are willing to replace with a WB: tag related to heists, however, so that a requester could prompt for past heists in their optional detail. This could be a tag as general as "WB: Heists (The Penumbra Podcast)" or something more specific about heists.
• The Will Darling Adventures - K. J. Charles : Will Darling/Kim Secretan & Archie Curtis/Daniel da Silva (WDA), similar tags — One of these characters is from "England Series - K. J. Charles" so this was nominated under the wrong fandom. Also, we don't allow this tag format, only A/B and A/B & C.
• What We Do in the Shadows (TV): Guillermo/Nandor & Laszlo/Nadja & Colin Robinson (WWDITS) — This tag has been removed from the tagset because it was accepted in error; the format A/B & C/D is not accepted in this exchange.
